A scoping review of side-dress nitrogen recommendation systems and their perspectives in precision agriculture

Martina Corti et al.

Summary: The scoping review identified that majority of N recommendation systems are empirical and based on spatialised vegetation indices, with limited use of mechanistic crop simulation models and machine learning techniques. Although recommendation systems appeared worldwide in 2000, there are limitations that can be improved with better data and algorithm integration.

Corn yield response to late-split nitrogen fertilizer

Emerson D. Nafziger et al.

Summary: Multiple applications of N fertilizer on corn are believed to have potential to lower N requirements or increase yields, but in experiments, it was found that early and late-split N applications did not show significant differences in economically optimum nitrogen rate and predicted yields. Applying late-split N is unlikely to be profitable in productive Corn Belt soils.

Coupling proximal sensing, seasonal forecasts and crop modelling to optimize nitrogen variable rate application in durum wheat

F. Morari et al.

Summary: A novel approach is proposed to manage site-specific nitrogen fertilization in durum wheat by integrating proximal sensing, seasonal weather forecasts, and crop modeling. This approach successfully reduces the amount of nitrogen supplied, improves crop nitrogen use efficiency, and decreases spatial variability in yield and protein content. Further improvements in model performance are necessary.

Soybean fallow and nitrification inhibitors: Strategies to reduce N2O emission intensities and N losses in Australian sugarcane cropping systems

Massimiliano De Antoni Migliorati et al.

Summary: This study assessed the long-term effects of using nitrification inhibitors and legume crops on nitrogen losses and nitrous oxide emissions in the Australian sugar industry using the DayCent model. The results showed that the combined use of legume fallows and nitrification inhibitor-coated fertilisers was the most effective strategy for reducing emissions while maintaining or increasing yields.

Modeling spatial and temporal optimal N fertilizer rates to reduce nitrate leaching while improving grain yield and quality in malting barley

Davide Cammarano et al.

Summary: Barley is crucial to the Scottish economy, with this study focusing on optimizing N fertilizer rates for barley production to reduce nitrate leaching while improving yield and quality. Long-term weather data and premium levels paid to farmers are key factors in identifying possible combinations for sustainable production practices.

Application of DSSAT CERES-Maize to Identify the Optimum Irrigation Management and Sowing Dates on Improving Maize Yield in Northern China

Patrick Rugira et al.

Summary: The increase in irrigated maize plantings in Northern China has led to a higher demand for irrigation water, potentially causing chronic water shortages in dry years. This research calibrated a DSSAT-maize model in the Loess Plateau to determine optimal irrigation management and sowing dates, aiming to enhance the stability of maize production and water efficiency. The calibration process demonstrated good consistency between measured and simulated data, while the evaluation of the model's performance showed satisfactory results in terms of crop yield, water use efficiency, and other parameters.

Using optimized three-band spectral indices to assess canopy N uptake in corn and wheat

Fei Li et al.

Summary: The research has improved the accuracy of estimating canopy nitrogen uptake for corn and wheat using hyperspectral remote sensing technology and optimized three-band spectral indices, identifying suitable central bands for assessing nitrogen uptake. Validation results show that using the optimized three-band nitrogen plane domain index can more accurately estimate the nitrogen status of crops.
