Attainment of Target Antibiotic Levels by Oral Treatment of Left-sided Infective Endocarditis: A POET Substudy

Magnus Bock et al.

Summary: Pharmacokinetic/pharmacodynamic analyses were conducted to assess the probabilities of target attainment for oral treatments of infective endocarditis. The majority of patients achieved the target level with orally administered antibiotics, supporting the efficacy of oral step-down antibiotic treatment in patients with infective endocarditis.

Risk factors for manifestations of frailty in hospitalized older adults: A qualitative study

Faye Wray et al.

Summary: This study explored the experiences of older people and ward staff to identify modifiable risk factors related to frailty during hospitalization. A theoretical framework of 67 modifiable risk factors was developed, grouped by patient risk factor domains and care management sub-domains. The findings highlight the need for a coordinated approach to address these risk factors at the ward and organizational level.

Surgical treatment of patients with infective endocarditis: changes in temporal use, patient characteristics, and mortality-a nationwide study

Andreas Dalsgaard Jensen et al.

Summary: This study investigated the use of valve surgery for infective endocarditis (IE) using nationwide registries in Denmark. The results showed a decrease in the use of valve surgery over time, accompanied by significant changes in patient characteristics. The likelihood of valve surgery was similar across different calendar periods, with a trend towards an increase, while 30 day postoperative mortality rates decreased.

Retrospective analysis of endocarditis patients to investigate the eligibility for oral antibiotic treatment in routine daily practice

J. C. Vroon et al.

Summary: One-third of patients with left-sided infective endocarditis in routine clinical practice may be candidates for switching to partial oral treatment. This could have significant implications for both patient's quality of life and healthcare costs. Future implementation of such a strategy should be accompanied by a prospective cost-effectiveness analysis.

Frailty and hospitalization-associated disability after pneumonia: A prospective cohort study

Chan Mi Park et al.

Summary: This study investigated the 30-day clinical course and functional outcomes of pneumonia in older adults with different levels of frailty. It found that older adults with higher frailty levels had a higher risk of death or functional decline in 30 days, and were more likely to require nasogastric tube feeding, prolonged hospitalization, and discharge to a long-term care institution. The study highlights the importance of frailty assessment in the acute care setting.
