Characterizing the driving dilemma among patients with psychogenic nonepileptic seizures: A single-center prospective cohort study

Sara Dawit et al.

Summary: This study investigated the frequency of epileptic seizures (ES) and psychogenic non-epileptic seizures (PNES) in an epilepsy monitoring unit and driving-related issues in each group. The results showed that although the PNES group had a higher frequency of events, a large percentage of these patients complied with driving law recommendations. Patients with PNES had a higher incidence of habitual events while driving but were less likely to be involved in accidents resulting in serious bodily injury compared to patients with ES.

Functional neurological disorder: new subtypes and shared mechanisms

Mark Hallett et al.

Summary: Functional neurological disorder is a common condition in neurological practice. The positive diagnosis of this disorder focuses on identifiable patterns of symptoms and signs that show variability over time. The pathophysiology involves overactivity of the limbic system, the development of an internal symptom model, and dysfunction of brain networks related to the sense of voluntariness in movement.

Risk-of-bias VISualization (robvis): An R package and Shiny web app for visualizing risk-of-bias assessments

Luke A. McGuinness et al.

Summary: Despite the availability of numerous software options for evidence synthesis, there is currently no universal tool for generating figures to display and explore risk-of-bias assessments. However, tools such as the R programming environment and Shiny have made it easy to create new tools for producing evidence syntheses. The new tool robvis facilitates the rapid production of publication-quality risk-of-bias assessment figures and is available as an R package and web app.

Ictal injury: Epilepsy vs. functional (psychogenic) seizures

Ali A. Asadi-Pooya et al.

Summary: The study aimed to compare the risk and types of ictal injuries among three groups of individuals with seizures (idiopathic generalized epilepsy, temporal lobe epilepsy, and febrile seizures). While the groups differed in demographic and clinical characteristics, there were no significant differences in rates of ictal injuries. Patients with temporal lobe epilepsy were more likely to report tongue injuries, but other types/locations of ictal injuries were reported to varying degrees by all three groups.

Psychogenic nonepileptic seizures treated as epileptic seizures in the emergency department

Alexander Lehn et al.

Summary: A significant portion of patients presenting to emergency departments with symptoms resembling epileptic seizures are actually diagnosed with PNES, particularly those with prolonged or multiple events. Early recognition and accurate diagnosis of patients with psychogenic nonepileptic seizures are crucial to prevent unnecessary iatrogenic harm and provide appropriate treatment.
