Paolo Pastorino et al.

Summary: Microplastic pollution is widespread and identifying a bioindicator species is crucial for monitoring its impact on ecosystems. Procambarus clarkii, a freshwater organism, was found to accumulate microplastics, making it a potential bioindicator for freshwater ecosystems. Further research is needed to understand the dynamics of microplastics in aquatic ecosystems and the feeding behavior of P. clarkii.

Chemical pollution and ecotoxicological effects of high-density polyethylene microplastics in Mytilus galloprovincialis from two Italian lagoon ecosystems

Francesca Provenza et al.

Summary: This study assessed microplastics, trace elements, polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbon (PHA) levels, and the oxidative stress response in Mytilus galloprovincialis from two Italian lagoon ecosystems. They also determined the ecotoxicological effects of high-density polyethylene (HDPE) microplastics on the mussels. Trace element levels were comparable among sites, while microplastics were only found in mussels from one site. Polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbon levels were always below the limit of quantification. The mussels from a different site had higher levels of oxidative stress biomarkers. The exposure test showed significant effects on mortality and biochemical biomarkers, and similar effects were observed based on color and nourishment conditions.

Blood from Horses and Cows In Vitro Exposed to Quaternium-15 and Thiacloprid: Haematology and Erythrocyte Osmotic Fragility Alterations

Federica Arrigo et al.

Summary: The aim of this study was to investigate the effects of two xenobiotics (Quaternium-15 and Thiacloprid) on the haematological profile and erythrocyte osmotic fragility (EOF) of equine and bovine blood samples. The results showed that exposure to the xenobiotics resulted in a decrease in red blood cells, white blood cells, haematocrit, haemoglobin, mean corpuscular volume, and platelets, as well as an increase in EOF. This study emphasizes the concept that blood cells are an excellent target for evaluating the effects of xenobiotics.

Physiological and biochemical responses to caffeine and microplastics in Mytilus galloprovincialis

F. Impellitteri et al.

Summary: This study aimed to investigate the impact of caffeine on marine mussels in combination with microplastics. The results showed that the combination of microplastics and caffeine had effects on the physiological indicators of mussels, while caffeine alone did not have a significant impact on oxidative stress indicators.

Sparkling plastic: Effects of exposure to glitter on the Mediterranean mussel Mytilus galloprovincialis

Francesca Provenza et al.

Summary: This study assessed the effects of different types and concentrations of glitter particles on Mytilus galloprovincialis and found a link between particle concentration and type, recovery rate, and oxidative stress in M. galloprovincialis. Smaller particles were more likely to be retained in the digestive tract and induced an increase in antioxidant defense. Certain types of glitter were found to crumble and shorten in length, leading to higher levels of oxidative stress biomarkers. Further research is needed to understand the toxic effects of glitter on aquatic organisms and quantify its proportion to other microplastics in the environment.

Identification of haemocytes and histological examination of gills of the spiny oyster Spondylus gaederopus (Linnaeus, 1758)

Jacopo Fabrello et al.

Summary: This study investigated the haemolymph cells and ctenidia of the Mediterranean spiny oyster, Spondylus gaederopus, aiming to detect new bioindicators in the marine environment. The study found that spiny oysters have relatively low number of circulating cells, rich granulocytes with lysosomes, and complex organization of ctenidia. These features suggest that spiny oysters may be promising bioindicators, but further research is needed to evaluate their physiological responses to stress.
