Effect of pH, surface charge and soil properties on the solid-solution partitioning of perfluoroalkyl substances (PFASs) in a wide range of temperate soils

Hugo Campos-Pereira et al.

Summary: The study investigated the pH-dependent soil-water partitioning of six perfluoroalkyl substances (PFASs) in 11 temperate mineral soils and found that PFAS sorption was positively related to perfluorocarbon chain length and inversely related to solution pH. Organic carbon alone was a poor predictor of PFAS partitioning, and additional factors such as Fe/Al (hydr) oxides and soil texture (silt + clay) played a role. A model based on soil organic matter charge underestimated PFAS sorption. This research highlights the need for further understanding of PFAS behavior and impact in soils.

Target and Nontarget Screening of PFAS in Biosolids, Composts, and Other Organic Waste Products for Land Application in France

Gabriel Munoz et al.

Summary: This study characterized the presence of per- and poly-fluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) in organic waste products used in agricultural fields in France. The results showed that PFAS levels were lower in agriculture-derived wastes compared to urban and industrial wastes. Historical municipal biosolids and composts were dominated by specific PFAS, while contemporary urban waste products were dominated by zwitterionic PFAS.

A Bad Start in Life? Maternal Transfer of Legacy and Emerging Poly- and Substances to Eggs in an Arctic Seabird

William Jouanneau et al.

Summary: Maternal transfer is a major exposure route for contaminants in birds, with PFAS compounds like linPFOS dominating in females and eggs. The study also found fluorotelomer carboxylic acid and ADONA in egg yolks for the first time, with emerging compounds below detection limit in female plasma. The transfer of PFAS to eggs was linearly related to the females, and PFCAs with longer carbon chains were preferentially transferred. The second-laid eggs had 73% of the PFAS levels compared to the first-laid eggs. Further research on the impact of maternal transfers on avian development physiology is warranted, especially for under-represented PFCAs and emerging fluorinated compounds.

Global occurrence and probabilistic environmental health hazard assessment of per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFASs) in groundwater and surface waters

Jaylen L. Sims et al.

Summary: Per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFASs) have gained global attention due to their chemical properties, environmental contamination, and risks to public health and the environment. This study examined the occurrence and distribution of 24 priority PFASs in global surface waters and groundwater, finding that PFASs levels were highest in rivers and streams, followed by lakes and reservoirs, and lowest in coastal and marine systems. The study also identified significant exceedances of drinking water guideline values for certain PFASs, particularly in Oceania and North America.

Toxic mechanism on phenanthrene-triggered cell apoptosis, genotoxicity, immunotoxicity and activity changes of immunity protein in Eisenia fetida: Combined analysis at cellular and molecular levels

Falin He et al.

Summary: This study investigated the toxicity and mechanisms of phenanthrene (PHE) in earthworms. The results showed that PHE exposure caused cell membrane damage, mitochondria-mediated apoptosis, and DNA oxidative damage. PHE also had detrimental effects on the immune system in earthworms. Furthermore, PHE disrupted the structure and function of lysozyme (LYZ). The binding of PHE to LYZ was mainly driven by hydrophobic and hydrogen bonding forces.

Summary: This study investigated the effects of early-life exposure to PFOA and PFOS on lipid accumulation, feeding behaviors, fatty acid composition, and genetic regulation using C. elegans as a model organism. The results showed that low concentrations of PFOA and PFOS induced obesity in C. elegans. The altered fatty acid composition and genetic regulation identified in this study provide insights into the metabolic disruption of lipid metabolism and obesity caused by PFOA and PFOS.
