Quantification of organic fluorophores in absorbing media by solid-phase fluorescence excitation-emission matrix (SPF-EEM) spectroscopy of modeled mixtures containing bovine serum albumin (BSA) and colorants

Yuki Nakaya et al.

Summary: Solid-phase fluorescence excitation-emission matrix (SPF-EEM) spectroscopy is a method to investigate natural organic matter (NOM) in the solid phase without extraction procedures. In this study, a new method using fluorescence intensity and Kubelka-Munk (KM) function to quantify the concentration of fluorescent material in the presence of absorbing materials was proposed. The results showed that the product of fluorescence intensity and KM function at the excitation wavelength was proportional to the first order of BSA weight concentrations, regardless of the type of colorant. This method may provide an empirical formula to quantify various fluorescent materials mixed with absorbing materials.

A new insight into the low membrane fouling tendency of liquid-liquid hollow fiber membrane contactor capturing ammonia from human urine

Junhui Zhang et al.

Summary: A comprehensive investigation was conducted to unravel the low membrane fouling tendency and underlying mechanism of liquid-liquid hollow fiber membrane contactor (LL-HFMC) for capturing ammonia from human urine. The results showed that the ammonia flux decline trend and membrane fouling propensity significantly strengthened with the decrease of feed urine pH. This was consistent with the decrease in foulant-membrane thermodynamic interaction energy. Microscale force analysis revealed that the absence of hydrodynamic water permeate drag force and operating at high pH condition minimized the membrane fouling during the LL-HFMC ammonia capture process.

In-situ monitoring of membrane fouling migration and compression mechanism with improved ultraviolet technique in membrane bioreactors

Zhao Cui et al.

Summary: An improved UV spectrum in-situ monitoring system was used to investigate membrane fouling behavior in membrane bioreactors (MBRs). The study showed that the formation of a stubborn fouling layer involves the migration and compression of fouling particles on the membrane surface. Furthermore, experiments involving moisture content measurement and ultrasonic thickness measurement confirmed the mechanism of fouling layer compression.

Characterization of activated sludge in wastewater treatment processes using front-face excitation-emission matrix (FF-EEM) fluorescence spectroscopy

Huaorng Yu et al.

Summary: In this study, the front-face fluorescence excitation-emission matrix (FF-EEM) spectroscopy was used to analyze the activated sludge samples. Protein-like substances and NADH were found to be good indicators for biomass and bioactivity of activated sludge, respectively. The fiber optic FF-EEM online measurement was stable and showed potential for fast analysis and online monitoring.

Data Analytics Determines Co-occurrence of Odorants in Raw Water and Evaluates Drinking Water Treatment Removal Strategies

Chunmiao Wang et al.

Summary: A study in China tracked the occurrence of 95 odorants in raw and finished water from 98 drinking water treatment plants, identifying over 70 odorants with varied concentrations. Analysis revealed co-occurring classes of chemicals in raw water, major factors affecting the occurrence of certain odorants, and the effectiveness of ozonationbiological activated carbon treatment in odorant removal. The study provides valuable insights for odor control and water quality management in the drinking water industry.

Multi-dimensional in-depth dissection the algae-related membrane fouling in heterotrophic microalgae harvesting: Deposition dynamics, algae cake formation, and interaction force analysis

Zhenjiang Yu et al.

Summary: The study showed that multi-dimensional methods can effectively dissect fouling mechanisms during heterotrophic microalgae harvesting, with particle deposition rate and protein deposition rate identified as the main factors causing permeate flux decline. Cake layers with low porosity at the bottom and orderly deposition exhibited good resistance performance to algae-related fouling.

Effect of ferrate pre-oxidation on algae-laden water ultrafiltration: Attenuating membrane fouling and decreasing formation potential of disinfection byproducts

Hai-Yang He et al.

Summary: Ferrate pre-oxidation was found to be effective in enhancing the FeCl3/ultrafiltration treatment of algae-laden source water, leading to disruption of algae cells, formation of algae-ferric floc, and degradation of algal extracellular organic matter. This treatment also improved membrane flux, reduced membrane resistance, and removed a significant amount of dissolved organic compounds and total nitrogen compared to conventional FeCl3/ultrafiltration treatment.
