Vehicle emissions of primary air pollutants from 2009 to 2019 and projection for the 14th Five-Year Plan period in Beijing, China

Tongran Wu et al.

Summary: Over the past decade, Beijing has upgraded its emission standards and fuel standards, improved vehicle structure by accelerating the elimination of old vehicles, and implemented policies to reduce the emissions of air pollutants. The results show that the emissions of four air pollutants from vehicles in Beijing decreased significantly in 2019, with the contribution of nitrogen oxides from diesel vehicles increasing. To further improve pollution control, it is necessary to promote clean and energy-saving diesel vehicles and adopt electric vehicles to reduce pollutant emissions. By the end of the 14th Five-Year Plan period, it is expected that the total emissions of the four vehicle pollutants can be further reduced.

Trends of Full-Volatility Organic Emissions in China from 2005 to 2019 and Their Organic Aerosol Formation Potentials

Haotian Zheng et al.

Summary: Emissions of organic compounds have significant impacts on the environment. Previous emission inventories focused on only a portion of these compounds, neglecting the contribution of semivolatile and intermediate volatile organic compounds to organic aerosol burden. This study developed a comprehensive emission inventory for China from 2005 to 2019, revealing changes in the sources and formation potential of organic aerosols. Findings indicate a decline in emissions of low/extremely low/ultralow VOC and SVOC after 2014, while emissions from volatile chemical products increased significantly and became the dominant source. These results highlight the importance of considering VCP, residential biomass burning, and diesel vehicles in future air pollution control policies.

Sources of Organic Aerosol in China from 2005 to 2019: A Modeling Analysis

Haotian Zheng et al.

Summary: Based on simulation and sensitivity analysis, this study found that the concentration of organic aerosol (OA) in China decreased from 2005 to 2019, but its sources remain unclear. Primary OA (POA) and secondary OA (SOA) were the main components of OA, with residential biomass burning being the major source of OA pollution, which decreased by 75%. Vehicle exhaust emissions became the largest SOA source in China, increasing by more than 2-fold. The control of NOx slightly offset the decrease in SOA concentration due to increased oxidation capacity.

Summary: This study conducted field measurements on four cement plants in China to investigate the emission levels, source profiles, and secondary pollutant generation potential of VOCs emitted from rotary and shaft kilns. It was found that the mass concentration of VOCs emitted from shaft kilns was significantly higher than that emitted from rotary kilns, and different VOC species dominated the emissions from each type of kiln. The study also showed the distribution of VOC emissions from the cement industry in China in 2019 and highlighted the importance of addressing high ozone formation potential (OFP) species in pollution control efforts.

Summary: Intermediate volatility organic compounds (IVOCs) from mobile sources play a significant role in the formation of secondary organic aerosol (SOA). This study establishes a comprehensive database of IVOC emission factors (EFs) based on measurements and correlations with hydrocarbons. The IVOC emissions from trucks and non-road construction machineries are the major contributors, accounting for over 66% of the total. The characteristics and spatial distributions of IVOC emissions vary significantly among different types and usages of mobile sources. The detailed IVOC emission inventories can be utilized to evaluate emission control policies for mobile sources.

Mobile Sources Are Still an Important Source of Secondary Organic Aerosol and Fine Particulate Matter in the Los Angeles Region

Yunliang Zhao et al.

Summary: By analyzing ambient and emissions data, it has been found that mobile sources make a significant contribution to the formation of secondary organic aerosol (SOA) in the Los Angeles region from 2009 to 2019. Despite the improvements in air quality, the reduction in organic aerosol (OA) concentrations has not been as significant as primary pollutants. It is suggested that reducing emissions from mobile sources will lead to further improvements in atmospheric SOA and PM2.5 mass in the Los Angeles region.

Comprehensive Assessment for the Impacts of S/IVOC Emissions from Mobile Sources on SOA Formation in China

Junchao Zhao et al.

Summary: Semivolatile/intermediate-volatility organic compounds (S/IVOCs) from mobile sources play a significant role in the formation of secondary organic aerosols (SOAs). However, the SOA contributions of S/IVOCs have not been comprehensively evaluated, and different parameterization schemes have not been simultaneously compared. In this study, three SOA schemes in the CMAQ model were used to quantify the mobile source S/IVOC-induced SOA (MS-SI-SOA) in China for 2018. The results showed that the 2D-VBS scheme predicted SOA concentrations that were in good agreement with observations, but there were still deviations in some regions. The peak value of annual average MS-SI-SOA was up to 0.6 +/- 0.3 μg/m3, with high concentrations detected in autumn and a notable relative contribution to total SOA in coastal areas during summer. The MS-SI-SOA concentrations varied among the three schemes, mainly due to differences in precursor emissions and chemical reactions. These findings highlight the importance of considering the differences between SOA schemes in modeling studies and emphasize the need for S/IVOC emission control in future emission standards.
