Efficiently Light-Driven Nonoxidative Coupling of Methane on Ag/ NaTaO3: A Case for Molecular-Level Understanding of the Coupling Mechanism

Jiangjie Zhang et al.

Summary: Metal-decorated oxide semiconductors are efficient photocatalysts for nonoxidative coupling of methane, but the detailed mechanism remains unknown. In this study, a series of noble metal-decorated oxides were investigated for methane coupling. It was found that the active sites for H abstraction and C-C coupling of CH4 were spatially separated. Noble metals, especially Ag, significantly decreased the energy barrier and promoted C-C coupling, leading to high CH4 conversion and selectivity. This work provides molecular-level insight into the CH4 coupling mechanism on metal-decorated photocatalysts.

High-performance photocatalytic nonoxidative conversion of methane to ethane and hydrogen by heteroatoms-engineered TiO2

Wenqing Zhang et al.

Summary: This study proposes a heteroatom engineering strategy for photocatalytic nonoxidative coupling of methane (NOCM) using Pd single atoms loaded onto TiO2 catalyst. By reducing the contribution of oxygen sites to the valence band with the construction of Pd-O-4 structure, high selectivity for C2H6 production is achieved. The photocatalytic system shows high activity, selectivity, and durability, approaching the level of thermocatalysis under mild conditions.

Non-oxidative Coupling of Methane: N-type Doping of Niobium Single Atoms in TiO2-SiO2 Induces Electron Localization

Ziyu Chen et al.

Summary: In this study, an n-type doped photocatalyst for NOCM was successfully developed by introducing Nb into TiO2-SiO2 microarray, showing promising performance. Comparison with other n-type dopants like Mo, W, and Ta further confirmed the positive effect of n-type dopant on CH4 conversion. In contrast, the doping of p-type dopants had a less active influence in this process.

Methane coupling and hydrogen evolution induced by palladium-loaded gallium oxide photocatalysts in the presence of water vapor

Mizuki Ishimaru et al.

Summary: This study investigated the reaction conditions of Pd-loaded Ga2O3 photocatalysts for enhanced production of ethane and hydrogen, revealing the crucial role of water vapor in promoting the photocatalytic non-oxidative coupling of methane. The presence of water vapor was found to significantly increase the production rate of C2H6 and H-2, with an apparent quantum efficiency of 5.1% under certain conditions. Water adsorbates on the photocatalyst surface were suggested to play a key role in facilitating the dehydrogenative coupling of CH4.

A selective Au-ZnO/TiO2 hybrid photocatalyst for oxidative coupling of methane to ethane with dioxygen

Shuang Song et al.

Summary: The study presents a highly efficient and selective photo-oxidation method for the direct conversion of methane to ethane using a Au nanoparticle (NP) loaded ZnO/TiO2 hybrid. This method achieves an ethane production rate of over 5,000 mu mol g(-1) h(-1) with 90% selectivity, which is more than an order of magnitude higher than current state-of-the-art photocatalytic systems. The enhanced photocatalytic activity is attributed to the formation of heterojunctions between ZnO and TiO2, while the Au cocatalyst facilitates C2H6 formation and inhibits overoxidation of CH4 to CO2.

Light-Induced Nonoxidative Coupling of Methane Using Stable Solid Solutions

Guangming Wang et al.

Summary: Efficient and direct conversion of methane under mild conditions is challenging due to difficulties in breaking the first C-H bond and suppressing complete dehydrogenation or overoxidation. Wurtzite GaN:ZnO solid solutions show promising photocatalytic performances for nonoxidative coupling of methane, achieving high conversion rate, long-term stability, and superior coke-resistance. Mechanistic studies reveal the importance of N-Zn-Ga-O-N units and absence of acid sites on the surface in enhancing reactivity and coke resistance.
