Regionalized Life-Cycle Water Impacts of Microalgal-Based Biofuels in the United States

David Quiroz et al.

Summary: This study quantifies the water footprint and water scarcity footprint of renewable diesel derived from algal biomass, and finds that algal cultivation requires less water compared to traditional ethanol and biodiesel feedstocks. The analysis also identifies the most suitable region for algal cultivation and highlights the potential of algal systems in managing wastewater streams.

Influence of nitrogen species and biomass retention time on nutrient removal and biomass productivity in a microalgae-based bioreactor

Thi-Dieu-Hien Vo et al.

Summary: This study investigated the effects of nitrogen species and biomass retention time on nutrient uptake and biomass productivity in Chlorella sp. It was found that 100% NO3--N promoted algae growth but had lower nutrient removal rates compared to 100% NH4+-N. The presence of ammonia nitrogen led to the flocculation of microalgae rather than biomass production. In a continuous membrane photobioreactor, shorter biomass retention time resulted in higher biomass productivity and pollutant removal rates.

Investigating algae for CO2 capture and accumulation and simultaneous production of biomass for biodiesel production

Abdul Hai Alami et al.

Summary: Carbon capture and sequestration technologies, such as using algae to absorb CO2 and convert it into biomass, are promising for reducing carbon emissions and producing biodiesel. The performance of these biosystems depends on various conditions, and different steps are involved in producing biodiesel from algae.

A validated thermal and biological model for predicting algal productivity in large scale outdoor cultivation systems

Jonah M. Greene et al.

Summary: A study developed a bulk growth model using geospatial data, reactor geometry inputs, and up to six parameters to predict algal productivity. Validation against experimental data showed high accuracy of the model in predicting algal concentration at harvest.

Driving toward sustainable algal fuels: A harmonization of techno-economic and life cycle assessments

Jesse R. Cruce et al.

Summary: Research has explored system designs for algae growth and conversion into biofuels, evaluating their economic feasibility and environmental impact through technoeconomic analyses and life-cycle assessments. Despite seemingly comparable outputs, differences in assumptions inherent to the modeling limit direct comparisons, necessitating harmonization efforts to enhance comparability and address limitations in productivity improvements beyond approximately 35 g-m(-2) day(-1). Harmonization efforts focused on productivity, economic assumptions, and system boundaries show promising results in reducing fuel price ranges and minimal improvements in LCA results.

Biofuels for Maritime Transportation: A Spatial, Techno-Economic, and Logistic Analysis in Brazil, Europe, South Africa, and the USA

Francielle Carvalho et al.

Summary: This paper evaluates the potential localities for maritime biofuel production in Brazil, Europe, South Africa, and the United States, with Brazil identified as the region with the highest biobunker potential. The costs of biobunkers are generally higher than traditional marine fuels, and the production competitiveness is influenced by carbon pricing.
