Fast oxidation and deep removal of As(III) by integrating metal-organic framework ZIF-67 and sulfite: Performance and mechanism

Siqi Hou et al.

Summary: In this study, a method using a cobalt-based metal-organic framework ZIF-67 and sulfite (S(IV)) was proposed to effectively remove As(III) from water. The coupled oxidation with adsorption process of As(III) removal by ZIF-67/S(IV) showed better results for arsenic removal from multi-component water than the divided preoxidation-adsorption process of As(V) removal by ZIF-67. The mechanism investigation revealed that S(IV) played a dual role in activating the ZIF-67 surface and facilitating the oxidation of As(III) to As(V).

A critical review on the development of lanthanum-engineered biochar for environmental applications

Lijun Yang et al.

Summary: This review focuses on the development and application of lanthanum-engineered biochar (LEB) in environmental applications, highlighting the preparation processes, dominant lanthanum species, and adsorption capabilities of LEB. LEBs are prepared through pre-/post-doping methods, involving precipitation, gelation, and calcination. The dominant lanthanum species in LEBs is La(OH)3, formed through precipitation of La ions with various bases. LEBs exhibit high efficiency in the adsorption of phosphate, arsenic, antimonate, and fluoride ions, attributed to the strong affinity of lanthanum to oxyanions and Lewis hard base.
