Temporal trends (1968-2019) of legacy persistent organic pollutants (POPs) in seabird eggs from the northeast Pacific: Is it finally twilight for old POPs?

John E. Elliott et al.

Summary: This study investigated the temporal trends of legacy persistent organic pollutants (POPs) in the eggs of five seabird species along Canada's Pacific coast. The results showed that most legacy POPs have either significantly declined or stabilized in recent years, attributed to voluntary regulations and international restrictions on their production and use.

Factors influencing mercury levels in Leach's storm-petrels at northwest Atlantic colonies

Ingrid L. Pollet et al.

Summary: This study investigated mercury exposure in Leach's storm-petrels, a pelagic seabird species, by analyzing egg and blood samples. The results showed that mercury concentrations increased with colony latitude, with higher concentrations in blood than in eggs. Mercury concentrations in blood were associated with low toxicity risk in birds from southern colonies and moderate risks in birds from northern colonies. The study also found that mercury concentrations were correlated with delta 34S, indicating the role of sulfate-reducing bacteria in methylation of mercury acquired through marine food webs. Additionally, blood mercury levels were higher when storm-petrels searched for food over deeper waters.

Temporal trends in PFAS concentrations in livers of a terrestrial raptor (common buzzard; Buteo buteo) collected in Belgium during the period 2000-2005 and in 2021

Thimo Groffen et al.

Summary: A study in Belgium found that the overall concentrations of PFAS in the livers of common buzzards remained similar over a 20-year period, despite regulations and phase-out efforts. However, the dominant types of PFAS varied between different time periods.

Kiah Lee et al.

Summary: Killer whales in the Northeastern Pacific are found to be contaminated with emerging contaminants and new persistent organic pollutants, raising concerns about their health and potential impacts on fetal development and neonate production. This study provides scientific evidence to support regulation and mitigation of pollutant sources to protect Southern Resident killer whale critical habitat and marine ecosystems.

Distribution and ten-year temporal trends (2009-2018) of perfluoroalkyl substances in gull eggs from Spanish breeding colonies

Pere Colomer-Vidal et al.

Summary: The study evaluated the geographical distribution and 10-year temporal trends of 17 PFAS in eggs of two gull species from 5 main Spanish colonies. PFOS was the predominant compound in all samples, with varying concentrations and patterns observed among different colonies. The study highlights the importance of continuous long-term monitoring using gull eggs as bioindicators of environmental pollution.

Temporal trends of essential omega-3 fatty acids in Atlantic and Pacific food webs as measured in eggs of Leach's storm-petrel Oceanodroma leucorhoa

Craig E. Hebert et al.

Summary: The populations of Leach's storm-petrel in the North Atlantic have declined, possibly due to reduced availability of essential nutrients caused by changing marine ecology resulting from global warming. This study found that concentrations of EPA and DHA in storm-petrel eggs did not decrease over time, and even increased on the Atlantic coast. Stable isotopes analysis suggested that storm-petrels foraging in offshore waters may have had increased access to n-3 HUFA.

Urban proximity while breeding is not a predictor of perfluoroalkyl substance contamination in the eggs of brown pelicans

Bradley P. Wilkinson et al.

Summary: Identifying sources of chemical stressors exposure in mobile organisms is difficult. Despite the migratory nature of brown pelicans, potentially significant concentrations of PFAS were found in their eggs regardless of the proximity to urban centers. This suggests a uniform exposure across individuals due to daily movements ranging up to 50 km from local point sources.

Temporal Trends of Organochlorine and Perfluorinated Contaminants in a Terrestrial Raptor in Northern Europe Over 34 years (1986-2019)

Jan Ove Bustnes et al.

Summary: The concentrations of legacy organochlorines and perfluoroalkyl substances in tawny owl eggs in central Norway have shown varying trends over the past few decades. Most legacy OCs and PFOS have not reached a lower threshold with stable background levels, and voluntary elimination of perfluoroalkyl carboxylates has not resulted in declining levels in tawny owls in central Norway.

Perfluoroalkylated compounds in the eggs and feathers of resident and migratory seabirds from the Antarctic Peninsula

Janeide Padilha et al.

Summary: This study investigated the factors influencing the differences in PFAA exposure among different species of Antarctic seabirds, and found that trophic position and foraging area were correlated with PFAA concentrations. The results suggest that long-distance migratory birds may play a role in the transport of pollutants in the Antarctic environment.

Spatial distribution and temporal trends of classical and emerging persistent organic pollutants (POPs) in black-tailed gull (Larus crassirostris) eggs from Korea

Mi Jang et al.

Summary: This study monitored the spatiotemporal trends of persistent organic pollutants (POPs) contamination along the Korean coasts using black-tailed gull eggs. The results showed higher levels of emerging POPs, such as brominated flame retardants (BFRs) and perfluoroalkyl acids (PFAAs), in eggs from certain areas influenced by urban pollution characteristics. The study highlighted the importance of continuous monitoring of PFAAs in the marine environment of Korea.

PFAS Exposure Pathways for Humans and Wildlife: A Synthesis of Current Knowledge and Key Gaps in Understanding

Amila O. De Silva et al.

Summary: The understanding of human and wildlife exposures to PFAS has mainly focused on a few traditional substances, but there is a need for assessment of a wider range of new PFAS. Diet is a major pathway of human exposure to some PFAS, but there is significant variability across populations and compounds. Total fluorine data and information on unidentified organofluorine are essential, and water has been identified as a major exposure source in contaminated communities. As water sources are remediated, other sources of exposure such as dust, personal care products, and indoor environments may become more significant.

It found that calculating trophic position using amino acid-specific values is more accurate than using bulk values, which helps assess the risk to top predators.

Summary: The study found no significant differences in PFAS concentrations between different colonies of Northern gannets in the UK, but observed significant increases in PFSAs in the early stages followed by declines, and significant increases in PFCAs towards the end of the study. Most eggs contained residues of PFOS that exceeded suggested safe levels.

Exposure to persistent organic pollutants is linked to over-wintering latitude in a Pacific seabird, the rhinoceros auklet, Cerorhinca monocerata*

John E. Elliott et al.

Summary: This study investigated the relationship between persistent organic pollutants and mercury burdens in rhinoceros auklets breeding on islands along the Pacific Coast of Canada and their wintering latitude using solar geolocation loggers and stable isotope analysis. The results showed that wintering latitude was the most consistent and significant predictor of some pollutants and mercury concentrations in auklet eggs. The exposure patterns varied by contaminant, with some decreasing and others increasing with wintering latitude.
