Large Contribution of Nitrous Acid to Soil-Emitted Reactive Oxidized Nitrogen and Its Effect on Air Quality

Yanan Wang et al.

Summary: Soil emissions of nitric oxide (NO) and nitrous acid (HONO) were investigated in this study. HONO emissions were found to be higher than NO emissions, especially in northern China. Long-term fertilization increased the abundance of nitrite-producing genes more significantly than NO-producing genes, especially in northern China. Simulation using a chemistry transport model showed that HONO emissions had a greater effect on air quality than NO emissions. These findings highlight the importance of considering HONO in assessing the impact of soil emissions on air quality.

Nitrosamine formation from the reaction of methamphetamine with gaseous nitrous acid

Alexandra Mayer et al.

Summary: Methamphetamine, the most commonly seized amphetamine-type stimulant globally, can leave chemical residues in properties for over 5 years, potentially posing risks to public health and safety. The ageing and fate of methamphetamine inside dwellings remain uncertain, with potential health risks possibly being underestimated. Experiments have shown a decrease in surface methamphetamine residue and the formation of N-nitrosomethamphetamine, indicating a need for further understanding of the health risks associated with contaminated properties.

Investigating the sources of atmospheric nitrous acid (HONO) in the megacity of Beijing, China

Rongrong Gu et al.

Summary: The study found that the concentration of HONO in the atmosphere in Beijing during early summer and winter is relatively high, with higher HONO production rates in early summer compared to winter. The mechanisms of HONO formation differ between the two seasons, with the photolysis of HONO playing a key role in regulating atmospheric oxidising capacity.

Long-Term Evolution of Particulate Nitrate Pollution in North China: Isotopic Evidence From 10 Offshore Cruises in the Bohai Sea From 2014 to 2019

Zheng Zong et al.

Summary: Atmospheric nitrate (NO3-) pollution is hindering the reduction of fine particulate (PM2.5) concentration in North China. Long-term measurements of NO3- and isotopic knowledge indicate an increasing proportion of NO3- in PM2.5 and seasonal variations in the isotopic composition of nitrate linked to coal combustion. The decline in coal combustion contribution, along with the enhancement of atmospheric oxidation and microbial processes, are the main causes of the increasingly serious NO3- pollution in North China.

Exploration of the atmospheric chemistry of nitrous acid in a coastal city of southeastern China: results from measurements across four seasons

Baoye Hu et al.

Summary: Identifying the atmospheric sources of HONO and understanding its concentrations and variations is crucial for understanding atmospheric chemistry processes. This study conducted seasonal field observations in a coastal city of southeastern China and found that vehicle exhaust emissions and unknown sources were the major contributors to HONO. The study also provided insights into the factors affecting HONO levels and its impact on OH radicals.

Summary: This study conducted continuous measurements of HONO and related parameters at an urban site in Beijing during intense summer and winter campaigns, revealing highly variable HONO levels and deriving additional unknown sources. Using a box model based on MCM, the research explored the chemistry and sources of HONO, finding differences in the major sources of HONO between summer and winter.

Strong marine-derived nitrous acid (HONO) production observed in the coastal atmosphere of northern China

Juan Yang et al.

Summary: This study conducted field observations at a coastal site in Qingdao, China, and found that the production of HONO in the marine atmosphere may have been previously underestimated, with marine-derived HONO having comparable or larger impacts on OH and O-3 compared to land-derived sources. Correlation analysis suggested that heterogeneous conversion of NO2 and photolysis of nitrogen-containing compounds were potentially important sources of HONO in the marine atmosphere.

High Gaseous Nitrous Acid (HONO) Emissions from Light-Duty Diesel Vehicles

Songdi Liao et al.

Summary: Nitrous acid (HONO) plays an important role in the budget of hydroxyl radical in the atmosphere. Vehicle emissions, especially from diesel trucks, are a crucial primary source of atmospheric HONO. The study found that emissions of HONO from diesel trucks were significantly higher than from gasoline vehicles, and decreased with more stringent control standards. Additionally, poor correlations between HONO and NOx emissions suggest that using the ratio to infer HONO emissions may lead to high uncertainty in HONO source budget. Conducting on-road measurements of HONO emissions under real-world driving conditions is important for improving understanding of HONO emissions.

Contribution of Vehicle Emission and NO2 Surface Conversion to Nitrous Acid (HONO) in Urban Environments: Implications from Tests in a Tunnel

Sheng Li et al.

Summary: By measuring HONO and NOx in an urban tunnel, this study found that the conversion of NO2 on urban surfaces is important for HONO production compared to NO2 conversion on aerosol surfaces. The high uptake coefficient of NO2 on tunnel surfaces helps explain the missing HONO sources in urban areas.

Agricultural Fertilization Aggravates Air Pollution by Stimulating Soil Nitrous Acid Emissions at High Soil Moisture

Yanan Wang et al.

Summary: The study found that different fertilizer types have an impact on HONO emissions, with urea leading to the largest release of HONO. The lab-derived parametrization scheme significantly improved postfertilization HONO predictions and increased O-3 and nitrate concentrations in the region. Adjusting fertilizer structures may reduce HONO emissions and improve air quality in heavily polluted agricultural regions.

Summary: This study used a machine learning model to estimate the long-term daily HONO concentrations across China and analyzed the key factors influencing the spatiotemporal variability of HONO concentrations. The results showed that HONO hotspots were mainly located in the Beijing-Tianjin-Hebei, Pearl River Delta, Yangtze River Delta, and several sites in the Sichuan Basin.
