PRINCIPLES OF ODOR CODING IN VERTEBRATES AND ARTIFICIAL CHEMOSENSORY SYSTEMS

Ivan Manzini et al.

Summary: Biological and artificial olfactory systems share similarities in input, receptor neuron/sensor functions, and processing steps, but differ significantly in the handling of receptor neuron outputs, especially with a lack of research on signal processing stages in the higher olfactory centers in electronic noses.

Hepatic encephalopathy

Dieter Haeussinger et al.

Summary: Hepatic encephalopathy is a neuropsychiatric syndrome that occurs in patients with liver disease. It affects the quality of life of patients and is the most serious complication of decompensated liver cirrhosis. Ammonia and inflammation play key roles in the development of hepatic encephalopathy, leading to cerebral edema, oxidative/nitrosative stress, inflammation, and disturbances in brain networks. Lactulose and rifaximin are currently the main medical treatments.

Anosmia in COVID-19: Underlying Mechanisms and Assessment of an Olfactory Route to Brain Infection

Rafal Butowt et al.

Summary: The prevalence of smell and taste dysfunction in COVID-19 differs between populations, possibly due to differences in virus strains or host proteins. Recent progress has been made in defining the cellular and molecular mechanisms of virus-induced anosmia, focusing on the role of sustentacular cells in the olfactory epithelium. The potential for using smell and taste dysfunctions as early diagnostic tools in COVID-19 is discussed.

Global, regional and national trends of atmospheric ammonia derived from a decadal (2008-2018) satellite record

Martin Van Damme et al.

Summary: The study utilized infrared satellite data to reveal a significant global increase in NH3 concentration over the past 11 years, driven primarily by regions in East Asia, Africa, North America, and Europe, with a decrease observed in southwestern India. National trends in NH3 emissions were analyzed in relation to changing factors such as anthropogenic and pyrogenic NH3 emissions, meteorological conditions, and sulfur and nitrogen oxides emissions impacting NH3 atmospheric lifetime. Additionally, a case study on the 'Dutch Nitrogen crisis' of 2019 in the Netherlands was conducted.

Ammonia exposure causes the imbalance of the gut-brain axis by altering gene networks associated with oxidative metabolism, inflammation and apoptosis

Yutao Li et al.

Summary: This study established a porcine exogenous ammonia poisoning model and found that exposure to ammonia led to differential expression of hundreds of genes in the jejunum and hypothalamus of pigs, activating pathways related to inflammation, oxidative metabolism, and apoptosis. Ammonia exposure also caused oxidative stress, imbalance of the brain-gut axis, and pathological damage in pigs. The study not only provided insight into the toxicity assessment of ammonia, but also enriched the understanding of its toxicological mechanisms.

Ammonia emissions in poultry houses and microbial nitrification as a promising reduction strategy

Ayman A. Swelum et al.

Summary: High levels of ammonia in poultry houses have negative effects on birds' growth and immune systems, while factors affecting the volatility rate of ammonia are pH, humidity, and manure nitrogen content. High ammonia levels increase the risk of respiratory infections in birds.
