Cr(VI) Reduction by Siderophore Alone and in Combination with Reduced Clay Minerals

Donglei Zhang et al.

Summary: Siderophores and iron-containing clays have been found to influence the transformation of chromium. In this study, the reduction of Cr(VI) by a tri-hydroxamate siderophore alone or in combination with reduced clays was investigated. The results showed that the reduction of Cr(VI) by the siderophore involved a one-electron transfer mechanism, resulting in the formation of Cr(V) intermediate and subsequent reduction to organically complexed Cr(III). Surprisingly, the presence of both the siderophore and reduced clays led to a decrease in the rate and extent of Cr(VI) reduction compared to reduced clays alone, indicating an inhibitory effect of the interaction between the siderophore and clays.

Production of Cr(VI) from CrxFe1-x(OH)3 precipitates and NOM-Cr(III) colloids upon reaction with H2O2 under oxic conditions

Binrui Li et al.

Summary: This study investigated the oxidation of Cr(III) from Cr0.5Fe0.5(OH)3 and NOM-Cr(III) colloids by H2O2 under oxic conditions. The experiments showed that increasing H2O2 concentration led to an increase in Cr(VI) generation from both Cr0.5Fe0.5(OH)3 and NOM-Cr(III) colloids. The oxidation of Cr(III) was promoted by increasing pH and adding Fe2+. Intermediate reactive Fe species formed during the reaction with H2O2 activated Cr(III) oxidation.

Visible Light Accelerates Cr(III) Release and Oxidation in Cr-Fe Chromite Residues: An Overlooked Risk of Cr(VI) Reoccurrence

Dashi Lei et al.

Summary: This study investigates the dissolution and transformation behaviors of Cr(III)-Fe(III) hydroxide in chromite ore processing residue (COPR) under visible light. The results show that the release rate of Cr(III) significantly increases under illumination in acidic conditions, while only photo-oxidation of Cr(VI) occurs in basic conditions. It is found that the presence of coexisting Fe in the solid plays a critical role in the pH-dependent release and transformation of Cr(III).

Redox Potentials of Magnetite Suspensions under Reducing Conditions

Thomas C. Robinson et al.

Summary: Predicting the redox behavior of magnetite in reducing soils and sediments is challenging due to inconsistent measured potentials and the lack of consensus on relevant Fe(III) | Fe(II) equilibria. In this study, we measured open-circuit potentials of stoichiometric magnetite equilibrated under various solution conditions and found Nernstian behavior in certain conditions. Our findings suggest that the maghemite/Fe(II)aq couple accurately predicts the redox behavior of stoichiometric magnetite suspensions in the presence of aqueous Fe(II) between pH values of 6.5 and 8.5. Additionally, a distinct shift in potentials was observed at higher pH values and without added Fe(II), indicating a change in the dominant Fe(III)|Fe(II) couple(s) poising the potential.
