The meaning of net zero and how to get it right

Sam Fankhauser et al.

Summary: The concept of net-zero carbon emissions is rooted in physical climate science but is operationalized through social, political, and economic systems. Seven critical attributes have been identified for the successful implementation of net zero, emphasizing the urgency of emission reductions, coverage of all emission sources, cautious use of carbon dioxide removals, and alignment with broader sustainable development objectives.

Country-specific carbon footprint and cumulative energy demand of metallurgical grade silicon production for silicon photovoltaics

Seyed M. Heidari et al.

Summary: The PV industry relies on high-quality silica sand for the production of silicon PV. However, scarcity of high-quality deposits and the use of lower-quality resources can increase the carbon footprint and cumulative energy demand of PV modules. Outdated data has led to an underestimation of PV production's environmental impact. The study evaluates the carbon footprint and energy demand of quartz mining, silica sand extraction, and silicon production for different quartz deposits. It also highlights the potential environmental impact of illegal mining and the importance of third-party supply chain verifications.

Provincial Greenhouse Gas Emissions of Gasoline and Plug-in Electric Vehicles in China: Comparison from the Consumption-Based Electricity Perspective

Yu Gan et al.

Summary: The study found significant variations in well-to-wheels greenhouse gas emission intensities of plug-in electric vehicles (PEVs) compared to gasoline vehicles at the provincial level in China in 2017. In some northern provinces, due to coal-based electricity and cold weather, the emission intensities of BEVs and PHEVs were higher than gasoline vehicles. It is suggested that province-specific policies should be implemented for reducing greenhouse gas emissions in on-road transportation in China.

Roadmaps to net-zero emissions systems: Emerging insights and modeling challenges

John E. T. Bistline

Summary: Understanding the economic and technical characteristics of net-zero emissions energy systems is crucial due to the increasing number of net-zero targets set by governments, regions, and companies. There is a general consensus on near-term low regrets strategies to achieve net-zero goals, including reducing coal generation, increasing renewable energy use, improving energy efficiency, electrifying end-use sectors, and investing in emerging technologies. However, differences in decarbonization strategies emerge as countries approach their net-zero emissions targets, with shifts towards clean electricity and reductions in fossil fuel use varying significantly across different countries, models, and scenarios. Collaborations in research are increasingly valuable to address modeling and analysis needs for stakeholders.

A comparative life cycle assessment of silicon PV modules: Impact of module design, manufacturing location and inventory

Amelie Mueller et al.

Summary: The study compared the environmental impacts of sc-Si glass-backsheet and glass-glass modules produced in China, Germany, and the EU, showing lower impacts for glass-glass modules and for production in Germany and the EU compared to China. The study emphasizes the significant levers for future reductions of environmental impacts, such as module efficiency, energy requirements, silicon consumption, and carbon intensity of electricity during production. The importance of up-to-date inventories and current modeling of electricity mixes for representative LCA results of PV modules is highlighted.

Life-cycle greenhouse gas emissions and net energy assessment of large-scale hydrogen production via electrolysis and solar PV

Graham Palmer et al.

Summary: Water electrolysis powered by solar photovoltaics is considered a promising green technology for producing hydrogen. In order to ensure its contribution to global energy decarbonisation, life cycle assessment and net energy analysis are important tools to evaluate its environmental impacts and energy balance. Despite initial findings of lower greenhouse gas emissions compared to traditional steam methane reforming, sensitivity analysis reveals that solar-electrolysis may have comparable emissions under certain conditions. Further research and integration of LCA and NEA into project planning is recommended to promote green hydrogen production goals.
