A quantitative analysis of research trends in flood hazard assessment

Wei Zhu et al.

Summary: This study analyzed the historical development and emerging fields of flood hazard assessment (FHA)-related research using bibliometric analysis. The results showed that the number of articles on FHA-related research has been increasing rapidly. The study also found that FHA-related research in developing countries lags behind developed countries but is advancing. Future research may focus on global change, coastal floods, compound disasters, and psycho-social aspects of flooding. Remote sensing and machine learning are also being increasingly used in this research field.

Assessment of Supply and Demand of Regional Flood Regulation Ecosystem Services and Zoning Management in Response to Flood Disasters: A Case Study of Fujian Delta

Jian Tian et al.

Summary: Global climate change has caused an increase in the frequency and damage of flood disasters, posing a serious threat to urban and rural security. The flood regulation ecosystem service plays a crucial role in mitigating flood disaster risk. Using the Fujian Delta as a case study, this research establishes a cross-scale framework and proposes a zoning management scheme based on supply and demand assessment for flood regulation ecosystem services.

Tracing design flood hydrograph uncertainty in reservoir flood control system

Aijun Guo et al.

Summary: Increasing studies have shown that the uncertainty in design flood hydrograph (DFH) can impact flood management decisions. A novel methodological framework is proposed to trace the DFH uncertainty propagation in reservoir flood control systems. Results indicate that uncertainty in reservoir flood control operations is reduced by the optimal operation model, with less uncertainty near peak flow periods.

Trade-offs between efficiency, equality and equity in restoration for flood protection

Jaramar Villarreal-Rosas et al.

Summary: Decision-makers and practitioners aim to achieve efficient and equitable outcomes for people and nature. This study explores the trade-offs between equality, equity, and efficiency in flood protection planning, using a case study in Australia. The findings highlight that different targeting approaches have varying impacts on efficiency, with evenly distributing the budget among local areas showing some improvements in equity.

Disentangling the ecosystem service 'flood regulation': Mechanisms and relevant ecosystem condition characteristics

Agnes Vari et al.

Summary: Riverine floods cause severe damages to human settlements and infrastructure, but ecosystems have the natural capacity to regulate floods. The flood regulating mechanisms are not consistently recognized in major ecosystem service classifications, highlighting the importance of assessing this ecosystem service for balanced landscape management.

Increasing urban flood risk in China over recent 40 years induced by LUCC

Kaisheng Luo et al.

Summary: Urbanization-induced land use/cover change has a significant impact on China's urban flood regulation service (UFRS), especially on urban pluvial floods. The study reveals that China's UFRS has declined over time and space, indicating that urbanization in China has increased the risk of urban pluvial floods.

Correcting streamflow bias considering its spatial structure for impact assessment of climate change on floods using d4PDF in the Chao Phraya River Basin, Thailand

Aakanchya Budhathoki et al.

Summary: This study focuses on the spatial bias heterogeneity of streamflow in the Chao Phraya River Basin in Thailand. It examines the impact of upstream dams and outlet bias corrections on future projections and compares them with a practical bias correction only at the outlet. The study finds that a warmer climate will lead to an increase in flood frequency and peak discharge in the basin, with a prolonged duration of floods. It concludes that future floods in the region will be more severe.

FRESF model: An ArcGIS toolbox for rapid assessment of the supply, demand, and flow of flood regulation ecosystem services

Kunyuan Wanghe et al.

Summary: River floods are the most damaging and costly natural disasters globally. Nonstructural flood mitigation measures provide critical regulation ecosystem services to human beings. However, there are relatively few empirical studies on flood regulation ecosystem services. This article presents a new model called FRESF, which can rapidly and economically evaluate the supply, demand, and flow of flood regulation ecosystem services.

Application of SWAT model with CMADS data for hydrological simulation in western China

Yuejian Wang et al.

Summary: Simulation of runoff in the upper reaches of the Jing River and Bo River Basins in the Tianshan area using the CMADS dataset and SWAT model showed ideal results on monthly and daily scales. Cultivated land in the basin reduces runoff, while grassland and woodland stabilize river flood season. Lakes and wetlands play an important role in runoff regulation.

A methodology for assessing spatio-temporal dynamics of flood regulating services

Stefano Mori et al.

Summary: This study examines the spatio-temporal dynamics of flood regulating ecosystem services and their supply and demand in the Arno River basin in central Italy. Results show that in the last decades, there have been changes in both the demand and supply of ecosystem services, with urbanization leading to increased demand for flood regulation, while land use changes have decreased the basin's capacity for flood regulation.

A new multiple return-period framework of flood regulation service-applied in Yangtze River basin

Ju Shen et al.

Summary: This study proposes a new framework that integrates multiple flood return periods to assess the expected annual EFRS supply and demand in the Yangtze River Basin, China. The results show that EFRS demand increases dramatically with the return period, while EFRS supply remains relatively constant. Considering upstream EFRS supply can reduce the number of unsatisfied sub-basins, highlighting the importance of catchment-wide EFRS management.
