On-road mobile mapping of spatial variations and source contributions of ammonia in Beijing, China

Summary: Measurements of ammonia emissions in Beijing using a cavity ring-down spectroscopy NH3 analyzer show that NH3 emissions have a significant impact on the city, with traffic emissions playing a major role in the increase of NH3, carbon dioxide, acetaldehyde, and acetone. The vehicle NH3:CO2 emission ratio is higher than expected, indicating the need for improved NH3 emission estimates and inventory allocations.

Vehicular Ammonia Emissions Significantly Contribute to Urban PM2.5 Pollution in Two Chinese Megacities

Yunjie Wang et al.

Summary: Previous studies have mainly focused on agricultural ammonia emissions and neglected the impact of vehicular ammonia emissions on air quality in cities. This study developed high-resolution emission inventories for Beijing and Shanghai based on traffic data and simulated the contribution of vehicular ammonia emissions to PM2.5 concentrations. It was found that vehicular ammonia emissions accounted for a significant proportion of total anthropogenic ammonia emissions in urban areas, and could contribute to approximately 3% of urban PM2.5 concentrations during winter. Controlling vehicular ammonia emissions is an effective measure to mitigate urban PM2.5 pollution in the future.

On-road tailpipe characterization of exhaust ammonia emissions from in-use light-duty gasoline motor vehicles

Motasem S. Abualqumboz et al.

Summary: A Portable Emissions Monitoring System (PEMS) was used to estimate ammonia emission rates from 47 in-use light-duty gasoline motor vehicles. The study found that older vehicles with aged catalytic converters had higher ammonia emissions rates compared to newer vehicles. Carbon monoxide and nitrogen oxides had a strong correlation with ammonia emission rates. These findings highlight the contribution of vehicles to atmospheric ammonia inventory and the influence of vehicle characteristics and precursor concentrations on ammonia emissions.

Analysis of the Impact of Variable Speed Limits on Environmental Sustainability and Traffic Performance in Urban Networks

Bassel Othman et al.

Summary: This work focuses on evaluating the potential of using variable speed limits (VSLs) in a synthetic urban network to improve both environmental sustainability and traffic performance. The traffic system is modeled using the microscopic traffic simulator SUMO, and a physical fuel consumption and NOx emission model is used to assess the vehicles' energy efficiency. The speed limits are controlled through a nonlinear model predictive control (NMPC) approach, where the traffic evolution and fuel consumption are predicted using a macroscopic traffic model (CTM) and a pre-calibrated artificial neural network (ANN). The results show that the proposed eco-VSL controller is faster at decongesting the network during transient phases between different levels of congestion, resulting in improved environmental sustainability and traffic performance in both the controlled network and its boundary roads.

Significant contributions of combustion-related sources to ammonia emissions

Zhi-Li Chen et al.

Summary: Atmospheric ammonia and ammonium have significant impacts on air quality, ecosystems, and climate. The contribution of combustion-related ammonia, which includes fossil fuels and biomass burning, has not been well understood. This study used nitrogen isotopes to differentiate between ammonia from volatilization and combustion, and found that combustion-related ammonia accounted for a considerable proportion of ammonia emissions in East Asia, North America, and Europe.

Evaluating the ammonia emission from in-use vehicles using on-road remote sensing test

Qijun Zhang et al.

Summary: The on-road remote sensing test in Zhengzhou collected data on ammonia emissions from in-use vehicles, revealing fluctuations in emission levels and different factors for gasoline, diesel, and other fuel vehicles. Improving emission standards plays a crucial role in reducing exhaust pollution, but the issue of high ammonia emissions in diesel and other fuel vehicles remains. The technology of remote sensing testing is effective in identifying high-emission vehicles and exempting clean vehicles from annual inspections.

Pathways of China's PM2.5 air quality 2015-2060 in the context of carbon neutrality

Jing Cheng et al.

Summary: According to the study, China can achieve its near-term climate goals by 2030 through fulfilling its National Determined Contributions (NDC) pledges and continuing air pollution control policies. However, reducing PM2.5 exposure to below 10 μg/m3 for the majority of the Chinese population by 2060 may require more ambitious climate mitigation efforts, such as China's carbon neutrality goals and global 1.5 degrees C-pathways. The research highlights the critical role of China's carbon neutrality goals in reducing air pollution exposure to the level of the World Health Organization guidelines and protecting public health.

Emission factors of ammonia for on-road vehicles in urban areas from a tunnel study in south China with laser-absorption based measurements

Sheng Li et al.

Summary: Vehicle emissions are an important source of ammonia (NH3) in urban areas, with gasoline vehicles showing reduced NH3 emissions due to improved engine and catalytic device performance, while heavy-duty diesel vehicles using urea selective catalytic reduction (SCR) technology may pose a concern for NH3 emissions. Despite contributing only 5% of total NH3 emissions in the Pearl River Delta region, vehicle emissions could still be a dominant source of NH3 in urban areas with little agricultural activity.
