Influencing factors on ureolytic microbiologically induced calcium carbonate precipitation for biocementation

N. Erdmann et al.

Summary: Microbiologically induced calcium carbonate precipitation (MICP) is a technique that has gained significant attention in geotechnology due to its potential as a sustainable and ecological alternative to conventional consolidation methods. Ureolysis, a microbiological metabolic pathway, is the most commonly used method for inducing calcium carbonate precipitation. Research on ureolytic MICP is interdisciplinary, involving both biological and civil engineering aspects, and aims to understand the underlying mechanisms and optimize the technology.

Alisa Gricajeva et al.

Summary: Most lipolytic enzymes originate from bacteria and have functional importance in various biotechnology sectors. They were initially classified into eight families and six lipase subfamilies based on amino acid sequences and biochemical properties. Later, this classification was expanded to 19 families and eight subfamilies, and more recently to 35 families and 11 subfamilies. This study investigated the catalytic function-related amino acids of the EstAG1 carboxylesterase from Staphylococcus saprophyticus AG1, and revealed that it belongs to a new family of bacterial lipolytic enzymes.

Sporosarcina pasteurii can Efficiently Precipitate Calcium Carbonate at High Salt Concentration

Rashmi Dikshit et al.

Summary: This study examines the adaptive behavior of Sporosarcina pasteurii in microbial-induced calcite precipitation under saline conditions. The urease activity decreases at higher salt concentrations, indicating a shift in biological pathways. Analysis of osmoregulatory proteins suggests halophilic adaptation and bicarbonate transport-mediated precipitation at higher salinity levels. Co-precipitation of CaCl2 and MgSO4 is confirmed under higher saline conditions, supporting the effectiveness of the strain.

Summary: A significant issue in microbially induced calcium carbonate precipitation (MICP) is the heterogeneous growth mechanics of calcium carbonate crystals. This study used microfluidic chip tests to visualize the distribution of bacteria and CaCO3 in a quiescent state. The experiments showed that bacterial diffusion was hindered in the presence of high concentration of CaCl2, while diffusion appeared homogeneous at low concentration. Furthermore, the distribution of CaCO3 was more uniform at low concentration compared to high concentration.

Summary: The mechanical properties of undisturbed root-soil composites were investigated using direct shear tests with different cementation concentrations achieved through microbially induced carbonate precipitation (MICP). The results revealed that MICP significantly strengthened the undisturbed root-soil composite, with a maximum increase in shear strength of about 160% after grouting. The shear strength of the composites increased with an increase in calcium chloride concentration, with the highest increase observed at a concentration of 0.75M. Calcium carbonate formed by MICP treatment exhibited cementitious properties, resulting in a 400% increase in cohesion and a 120% increase in internal friction angle of the root-soil composite.

Testing the Capacity of Staphylococcus equorum for Calcium and Copper Removal through MICP Process

Sebastian Sepulveda et al.

Summary: The study found that compared to Sporosarcina pasteurii, the Staphylococcus equorum strain showed lower activity in microbial-induced calcite precipitation and copper removal. However, the halophilic feature of S. equorum was not considered, making it a promising bacterial strain for application in process water when seawater is used. Copper removal was insufficient, likely due to the formation of a copper-ammonia complex. Further research on the optimization of culture conditions for S. equorum in copper removal is needed for better performance in calcium, copper, or other metals precipitation.
