Adsorption of methylene blue dye from aqueous solution using low-cost adsorbent: kinetic, isotherm adsorption, and thermodynamic studies

Safaa Talib Al-Asadi et al.

Summary: The environmentally friendly byproduct of fruit plants, fig leaf, has been successfully used as an adsorbent for methylene blue dye. The prepared fig leaf-activated carbon (FLAC-3) showed good adsorption performance, with an adsorption capacity of 24.75 mg/g for 0.08 g and 41 mg/g for 0.02 g. The adsorption process followed the Langmuir isotherm model, forming a monolayer on the surface of the adsorbent. These findings demonstrate that FLAC-3 is a low-cost adsorbent with potential for efficient removal of cationic dye methylene blue.

Recent advances in the biocatalytic mitigation of emerging pollutants: A comprehensive review

Bernard Chukwuemeka Ekeoma et al.

Summary: The issue of environmental pollution has been worsened by new contaminants whose morphology is not fully understood. Bioremediation involving plants, microbes, or enzymes has emerged as a cost-effective and eco-friendly approach to mitigate the pollution effects of these emerging contaminants. However, enzyme-mediated bioremediation faces challenges such as temperature, pH, storage stability, and recycling difficulty. Immobilization of enzymes has been successfully applied to address these challenges, but it comes with additional costs and limitations. This review provides state-of-the-art information on bioremediation using enzymes, including the sustainability of bio-catalysts, ecotoxicological evaluation, enzyme groups used, and challenges to large-scale implementation.

Facile sono-design of 3D flower-like NiO-CuFe2O4 nano-heterostructure as an efficient and magnetically separable catalyst for photodegradation of organic dyes

Iman Ghasemi et al.

Summary: The magnetic flower-like NiO-CuFe2O4 p-p heterostructure nanophotocatalysts were prepared and studied for the photodegradation of different organic dyes. Among them, the p-p heterostructured NiO-CuFe2O4 nanophotocatalyst with 40 wt% NiO and 60 wt% CuFe2O4 (NiO(40)-CuFe2O4(60)) showed the best photocatalytic performance, achieving removal and mineralization rates of 88.7% and 73.4% for malachite green, respectively. This enhanced performance was attributed to its high light absorption capacity, effective charge carrier separation, unique morphology, specific surface area, pore volume, band gap energy, and p-p heterojunction structure.

Photocatalytic efficiency of graphene/nickel oxide nanocomposites towards the degradation of anionic and cationic dye molecules under visible light

Muthuchamy Maruthupandy et al.

Summary: In this study, we synthesized NiO NRs and Grn/NiO NCs using a chemical reduction approach. The crystalline nature and surface morphology of the materials were analyzed using X-ray diffraction and transmission electron microscopy. The photocatalytic efficiency of Grn/NiO NCs was investigated for anionic and cationic dye molecules. The results showed that Grn/NiO NCs exhibited high photocatalytic activity for MB and MO dye molecules, and the presence of Grn enhanced the photocatalytic activity. We successfully developed visible light functionalized Grn/NiO NCs photocatalysts using a simple and cost-effective method, which have potential for practical environmental applications and large-scale production.
