Damming river shapes distinct patterns and processes of planktonic bacterial and microeukaryotic communities

Lunhui Lu et al.

Summary: This study analyzed the biogeographic patterns and community assembly processes of planktonic bacterial and microeukaryotic communities in large damming rivers. The results showed significant differences in the communities between dam-affected zones and river zones, with dams reducing the diversity of bacterial communities. Co-occurrence network analysis revealed denser networks in the river zone, with more complex relationships among species in bacterial networks. Dispersal limitation and ecological drift were identified as the main processes influencing planktonic communities in the dam-affected zone, while deterministic processes played a greater role in the river zone.

Phycocyanin-rich Synechococcus dominates the blooms in a tropical estuary lake

Feijian Mao et al.

Summary: Cyanobacterial blooms pose a challenge to safe water supply in estuary reservoirs. This study investigated the biweekly abundances and dynamics of picoand nano-phytoplankton in a tropical estuary lake after a prolonged bloom event. The results showed that turbidity played an important role in the formation of the current blooms.

Distribution characteristics, risk assessment, and quantitative source apportionment of typical contaminants (HMs, N, P, and TOC) in river sediment under rapid urbanization: A study case of Shenzhen river, Pearl River Delta, China

Ying Zhang et al.

Summary: This study analyzed the distribution, risk, and sources of heavy metals, nutrients, and physicochemical parameters in the sediment of Shenzhen River. The results showed that the heavy metal pollutants were mainly Cd, Cu, Zn, Pb, Ni, and Cr, originating from industrial and domestic wastewater. Non-point sources such as urban surface runoff, natural sources, and solid waste also contributed to the pollution.

Bacterial Dynamics and Their Influence on the Biogeochemical Cycles in a Subtropical Hypereutrophic Lake During the Rainy Season

Osiris Diaz-Torres et al.

Summary: This study investigated the temporal dynamics of bacterial communities in Lake Cajititlan and their genes associated with biogeochemical cycles during the rainy season. The results showed significant temporal variations in the composition of bacterial communities, with pH, dissolved oxygen, oxidation-reduction potential, and other climatological parameters being most correlated with the bacterial communities and their functional profiles. The study enriches our understanding of the interaction between bacterial communities and major biogeochemical processes in eutrophic subtropical lakes.

Carbon fixation rates in groundwater similar to those in oligotrophic marine systems

Will A. Overholt et al.

Summary: The terrestrial subsurface contains most freshwater reserves and prokaryotic biomass. A study estimated carbon fixation rates in a carbonate aquifer using a C-14-labelling technique and found similarities to those in oligotrophic marine surface waters. The study suggests the importance of in situ carbon fixation in subsurface ecosystem processes.

Bacterial community composition and indicators of water quality in Caizi Lake, a typical Yangtze-connected freshwater lake

Na Gao et al.

Summary: This study investigated the trophic status, bacterial community composition, and their influencing factors in Caizi Lake. The results showed that the water quality of Caizi Lake has improved, and there were significant differences in bacterial community composition between water samples from different sampling sites. Dissolved oxygen and total phosphorus were identified as the main factors affecting the bacterial community in water and sediment samples, respectively.

New insights in correlating greenhouse gas emissions and microbial carbon and nitrogen transformations in wetland sediments based on genomic and functional analysis

Cheng Cheng et al.

Summary: The study investigated the relationship between microbial carbon and nitrogen transformations and GHGs emissions in constructed wetlands with different substrate samples. Results showed variation in COD removal and nitrogen nutrient removal between the two groups, with XRCW having higher microbial activity and GHGs emissions compared to DRCW. Certain microbial species and nitrogen transformations were correlated with GHGs emissions in the wetland systems.
