Effects of gestational exposure to perfluorooctane sulfonate on the lung development of offspring rats

Huishan Zhang et al.

Summary: The study suggests that gestational exposure to PFOS may impact lung development in offspring by reducing alveolar numbers, causing simplified alveolar structure and thickened alveolar septa. PFOS-treated animals also showed increased lung inflammation and up-regulated inflammasome associated proteins, as well as raised inflammatory cytokines, while down-regulating critical factors promoting alveolar development and pulmonary angiogenesis.

Intrauterine exposure to per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances may harm children ' s lung function development

Yen-Ping Kung et al.

Summary: The study revealed that prenatal exposure to PFAS, especially PFOS, may play a vital role in the development of lung function in children. There was a consistent correlation between PFOS concentration in cord blood and decreasing lung function, particularly in subgroups with lower birth weight and allergic rhinitis. Higher concentrations of PFOA, PFOS, PFNA, and PFUA were found in cord blood compared to serum from eight-year-olds.

PFAS Exposure Pathways for Humans and Wildlife: A Synthesis of Current Knowledge and Key Gaps in Understanding

Amila O. De Silva et al.

Summary: The understanding of human and wildlife exposures to PFAS has mainly focused on a few traditional substances, but there is a need for assessment of a wider range of new PFAS. Diet is a major pathway of human exposure to some PFAS, but there is significant variability across populations and compounds. Total fluorine data and information on unidentified organofluorine are essential, and water has been identified as a major exposure source in contaminated communities. As water sources are remediated, other sources of exposure such as dust, personal care products, and indoor environments may become more significant.

Exposure to perfluoroalkyl substances during fetal life and hospitalization for infectious disease in childhood: A study among 1,503 children from the Odense Child Cohort

Louise Dalsager et al.

Summary: This study investigated the association between maternal serum concentrations of five PFASs during pregnancy and the child's rate of hospitalization due to common infectious diseases between birth and 4 years of age. It found that a doubling in maternal PFOS concentration was associated with an increased risk of hospitalization due to any infection, and doubling of PFOA or PFOS increased the risk of lower respiratory tract infections.
