Depth-dependent patterns of soil microbial community in the E-waste dismantling area

Kang Yan et al.

Summary: The long-term dismantling of electronic waste has caused significant contamination in the soil environment. This study investigates the depth-resolved microbial communities in the dismantling sites and surrounding farmland of a Chinese E-waste disposal center. The results show that the main pollutants in the soil profiles were cadmium and copper, with concentrations decreasing gradually with depth. The surrounding contaminated farmland exhibited stronger niche differentiation and higher modularity among microbes, indicating enhanced functional diversity.

Abundant fungi dominate the complexity of microbial networks in soil of contaminated site: High-precision community analysis by full-length sequencing

Kang Yan et al.

Summary: Over the past decade, high-throughput short-read amplicon sequencing has been the main method for characterizing microbial communities in soil from contaminated sites. However, due to the similarity of amplicon sequences from 16S rRNA and ITS genes, this approach often limits the analysis of microbial composition at the species level. In this study, full-length and short-read amplicon sequencing were simultaneously conducted to provide a high-resolution perspective on the community composition and ecological status of different microbial taxa in contaminated soil. The findings demonstrate that full-length sequencing provides better resolution for bacterial identification and contributes to a better understanding of ecological mechanisms and microbial interactions in soil ecosystems.

Experimental temperatures shape host microbiome diversity and composition

Jingdi Li et al.

Summary: Global climate change has led to more extreme thermal events, and this study found that microbiome diversity and composition change in response to warming and cooling. Host habitat and experimental factors have a greater impact on microbiome diversity and composition than host biological traits. Aquatic organisms, especially in marine habitats, experience a greater depletion in microbiome diversity under cold conditions compared to terrestrial hosts. The findings improve our understanding of the impact of global temperature changes on animal and plant microbiome structures.

Patent mining on soil pollution remediation technology from the perspective of technological trajectory

Zefeng Qi et al.

Summary: Recent years have witnessed an increase in soil environmental problems, but the direction of research and development (R&D) for soil pollution remediation technology (SPRT) to address these challenges remains unclear. This study examines the status and future direction of SPRT through the analysis of 14,475 patents from 1971 to 2020. It is found that the United States, Japan, and South Korea hold a monopoly in SPRT, and patent organizations play a crucial role in technology transfer. The study identifies the need for more research on microbial-assisted phytoremediation technology, as well as green and cost-effective solutions for reducing organic pollutants in soil remediation.

Remediation of emerging contaminated sites due to uncontrolled e-waste recycling

Summary: The use of primitive techniques in recycling electronic waste has resulted in severe soil pollution. Remediation techniques such as spray tower, electronic precipitation, photocatalysis, and phytoremediation using suitable plants and microbes are recommended to decontaminate soil, sediment, and water contaminated by toxic metals and persistent organic pollutants. Proper vegetation can also extract, stabilize, and degrade pollutants, restoring soil functions and health.

Depth effects on bacterial community assembly processes in paddy soils

Weitao Li et al.

Summary: Bacterial communities in soil play a critical role in carbon and nutrient cycling. This study investigated the assembly and distribution of bacterial communities at different soil depths. The results showed that bacterial diversity and abundance decreased with soil depth due to limited access to carbon and nutrients. The relative abundance of different phyla also varied with soil depth. The study also found that ecological interactions between bacterial taxa increased with depth, leading to reduced functional redundancy. The study provides valuable insights into the assembly processes of bacterial communities in different soil depths.

Genmei Lin et al.

Summary: This study investigated the impacts of bait input on sediment microbial community, greenhouse gas (GHG) production, and physicochemical properties. The results showed that bait input significantly affected dissolved oxygen, dissolved organic carbon, and various sediment properties. Additionally, bait input led to changes in microbial community composition and increased GHG production. These findings highlight the importance of coastal aquaculture in global GHG emissions.

Responses of abundant and rare prokaryotic taxa in a controlled organic contaminated site subjected to vertical pollution-induced disturbances

Zhirui Qin et al.

Summary: This study investigated the distribution, ecological diversity, and co-occurrence patterns of abundant and rare prokaryotic subcommunities in vertical soil profiles of an organic contaminated site using 16S rRNA high-throughput sequencing. The results showed that abundant taxa were widespread, while rare taxa were unevenly distributed. Rare subcommunity had higher taxonomic groups and diversity than abundant subcommunity. Co-occurrence analysis revealed that rare taxa were more centrally located in the network and more likely to cooperate with non-abundant species than abundant taxa.

Pollution pressure and soil depth drive prokaryotic microbial assemblage and co-occurrence patterns in an organic polluted site

Zhirui Qin et al.

Summary: This study investigated the microbial diversity and community assembly in an abandoned chemical organic contaminated site using high-throughput sequencing technology. The results revealed that microbial alpha diversity did not significantly differ among different soil layers, but the structure of microbial communities varied significantly. The study also found that the soil prokaryotic microbial community had evolved the potential to degrade organic pollutants under long-term organic pollution stress. Organic contaminants were identified as the key driver of destabilizing co-occurrence networks.

Exposure to fungicide difenoconazole reduces the soil bacterial community diversity and the co-occurrence network complexity

Houpu Zhang et al.

Summary: Difenoconazole degrades faster in non-sterilized soils than in sterilized soils, indicating that biodegradation is a major factor in its dissipation. High concentrations of difenoconazole decrease soil bacterial community diversity, with this effect worsening as the concentration increases. The impact of difenoconazole on soil bacterial communities is also influenced by the organic matter and total nitrogen content in soils.

Stochastic community assembly decreases soil fungal richness in arid ecosystems

Shuo Jiao et al.

Summary: A large-scale cross-biome soil survey in arid regions of northwest China revealed that fungal communities in agricultural soils are more influenced by stochastic assembly processes and have a strong relationship with fungal richness. Aridity was identified as the most important environmental factor affecting fungal richness, beta-diversity, and species co-occurrence patterns. These findings advance our understanding of the mechanisms underlying biogeographic patterns and assembly processes of fungal communities in arid ecosystems, and can be used to predict species co-occurrence and diversity patterns under climate aridity and land-use change scenarios.
