Assessment of long term durability properties of blended fly ash-Rice husk ash alkali activated concrete

Sarah Fernando et al.

Summary: This study evaluates the long-term durability of a blended fly ash-rice husk ash (RHA) AAC and compares it with 100% fly ash AAC. The addition of RHA negatively affects the durability properties due to crack propagation and formation of efflorescence products. The degree of crack propagation and microstructure homogeneity are the main factors influencing long-term durability. However, the blended AAC shows improved resistance to chloride ingress over time.

Where to focus? Developing a LCA impact category selection tool for manufacturers of building materials

Haibo Feng et al.

Summary: This article proposes an impact category selection tool that improves the environmental performance of building materials without sacrificing the validity of life cycle assessment (LCA) results. The tool suggests that Global Warming Potential, Ozone Formation and Human Health, Fine Particulate Matter Formation, Ozone Formation and Terrestrial Ecosystems, Terrestrial Acidification, and Terrestrial Ecotoxicity should be considered the first priority group. It further explains that decision makers can readily improve the environmental performance of building materials by allocating resources to this priority group.

Environmental impact assessment of alkali-activated materials: Examining impacts of variability in constituent production processes and transportation

Anastasija Komkova et al.

Summary: This study compares the environmental impacts of alkali-activated concretes containing blast furnace slag, fly ash, and metakaolin with Portland cement concretes. The production processes of the mix constituents and transportation distances are evaluated, and it is found that alkali-activated materials have significantly lower CO2 eq. emissions than PC concretes. Taking into account the variability in production technologies of precursors and activators, alkali-activated materials still have lower CO2 eq. emissions than PC concretes.

Life-cycle assessment and multi-criteria performance evaluation of pervious concrete pavement with fly ash

Xiaodan Chen et al.

Summary: The study focuses on the life cycle assessment and multi-criteria assessment of pervious concrete pavement with fly ash, integrating hydraulic and structure designs for functional unit development and combining environmental impacts with engineering and economic indicators. The research found that the environmental impacts of pervious pavement system were mainly generated from material stage in terms of GHG emissions and energy consumption, and the performance rankings of pervious concrete mixes were different from those of pervious pavement structures. The environmental impact of pervious concrete pavement with fly ash can vary depending on mechanic properties and surface layer thickness.

Performance and life-cycle assessment of high-volume fly ash concrete mixes containing steel slag sand

Indrakiran Reddy Mocharla et al.

Summary: This study discusses the performance of high-volume fly ash concrete mixes with slag sand, which is a waste product from the steel industry. The mixes were optimized for structural strength and cement and natural sand were replaced with fly ash and slag sand up to 50%. The study examined various properties of the mixes, including strength, durability, temperature rise, and microstructure, and found that the inclusion of slag sand enhanced the strength and durability of the concrete. This is significant for India, the second largest cement producer in the world, as it allows for the production of eco-friendly concrete.

Effects of aggregate types on acid corrosion attack upon fly-Ash geopolymer and Portland cement concretes-Comparative study

B. Pather et al.

Summary: The study compared the effects of different types of aggregates on the acid resistance behaviors of fly ash - geopolymer (FA - GPC) and Portland cement (PC) concretes. It was found that FA - GPC concretes showed superior acid resistance compared to PC concretes. The results suggest that granites or siliceous aggregates are suitable for producing acid resistant FA - GPC concretes, while calcareous aggregate types, especially dolomite, are effective in reducing the progression of acid attack upon PC concretes.
