Accelerated degradation of groundwater-containing malathion using persulfate activated magnetic Fe3O4/graphene oxide nanocomposite for advanced water treatment

Maryam Dolatabadi et al.

Summary: In this study, the degradation yield of Malathion (MT) from groundwater was investigated using persulfate activated magnetic Fe3O4/graphene oxide nanocomposite (PS/Fe3O4-GO MNCs). The optimal conditions for MT degradation were determined to be MT concentration of 3.7 mg/L, PS concentration of 2.25 mM, Fe3O4-GO MNCs dosage of 225 mg/L, reaction time of 22 min, and pH of 4. The estimated optimal degradation efficiency was 96.5%. Furthermore, the usage of Fe3O4-GO MNCs for PS activation showed a distinct synergistic effect. The MT degradation rate followed a pseudo-first-order kinetic model, and sulphate radicals were found to be the dominant species in MT degradation. The results suggest that the PS/Fe3O4-GO MNCs degradation process is an effective method for remediating waters contaminated with MT and related pesticides.

Simultaneous electrochemical degradation of pesticides from the aqueous environment using Ti/SnO2-Sb2O3/PbO2/Bi electrode; process modeling and mechanism insight

Maryam Dolatabadi et al.

Summary: In this study, a modified Bi-PbO2 electrode was used to simultaneously degrade fenitrothion, trifluralin, and chlorothalonil in synthetic and pesticide wastewater. A high-performance liquid chromatography method was developed to identify the pesticides simultaneously. Quadratic models were developed to investigate the effects of operating parameters and predict the degradation efficiencies. The maximum degradation efficiencies obtained were 99.7%, 100%, and 100% for fenitrothion, trifluralin, and chlorothalonil, respectively.

Degradation of Bisphenol A by ozonation in a rotating packed bed: Modeling by response surface methodology and artificial neural network

Lei Wang et al.

Summary: The ozonation process of BPA in a rotating packed bed was simulated using response surface methodology and artificial neural network. The interactive effects of various parameters on BPA degradation efficiency were investigated, with ozone concentration and pH being the most significant factors. Both RSM and ANN models accurately predicted BPA degradation efficiency, with RSM model slightly outperforming ANN model.

Thermochemical conversion of municipal solid waste into energy and hydrogen: a review

Rajendran Nandhini et al.

Summary: The rising global population is leading to an increase in municipal waste, causing issues of rising cost and environmental pollution. Therefore, alternative treatments like waste-to-energy should be developed. Thermochemical methods can convert municipal solid waste into energy, with energy yield depending on operating conditions and feedstock composition. Integrating multiple thermochemical treatments is gaining momentum due to higher energy yield.

Treatment of landfill leachate with different techniques: an overview

Amin Mojiri et al.

Summary: Landfill leachate is characterized by high chemical and biological oxygen demand, containing undesirable substances such as organic and inorganic contaminants. Different treatments including biological methods like bioreactors, bioremediation, and physicochemical approaches like advanced oxidation processes, adsorption, and membrane filtration have been investigated for treating landfill leachate. Combined treatment techniques have shown good performance in removing pollutants such as ammonia, nitrogen, suspended solids, turbidity, and metals from landfill leachate.

Weiming Chen et al.

Summary: Membrane separation technologies, mainly nanofiltration (NF) and reverse osmosis (RO), have been widely used in China for treating landfill leachate. The technologies are mainly concentrated in eastern and southwestern China, where municipal solid waste (MSW) is relatively high. However, the membrane retentate produced by the technology is heavily contaminated, posing a significant challenge.

A comparative study and combined application of RSM and ANN in adsorptive removal of diuron using biomass ashes

Sunil K. Deokar et al.

Summary: In this study, biomass ashes such as RHA and BFA were utilized for the aqueous phase removal of diuron, a pesticide. Response surface methodology (RSM) and artificial neural network (ANN) were employed to estimate and optimize the conditions for maximum diuron adsorption using biomass ashes. The operational parameters' effects on adsorption were studied through central composite design (CCD) matrix, and the ANN model was found to fit better than RSM for this process.

Removal of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) in conventional drinking water treatment processes

Isabel Gutierrez-Urbano et al.

Summary: Monitoring of PAH levels during drinking water treatment processes revealed that the addition of KMnO4, FeCl3, and NaClO can effectively remove PAHs, with removal rates of certain compounds reaching over 90%. The conventional treatment processes have been shown to reduce PAHs below the legal limits for drinking water quality. A parameter based on the chemical properties of PAHs was defined to predict the removal rate of pollutants, providing valuable information for plant operation.
