A data driven gully head susceptibility map of Africa at 30 m resolution

Sofie De Geeter et al.

Summary: This study collected data and developed an empirical model to predict gully head density at high resolution in Africa. The model showed that gully occurrences mainly depend on slope steepness, soil texture, and vegetation cover, and to a lesser extent on rainfall intensity and tectonic activity.

Monitoring gully erosion in the European Union: A novel approach based on the Land Use/Cover Area frame survey (LUCAS)

Summary: The European Commission has identified soil erosion as a significant threat to soil resources in the European Union (EU). This study integrates a soil erosion module into the 2018 LUCAS Topsoil Survey to monitor gully erosion in the EU and UK. The results show that the method is effective in detecting gully erosion and mapping permanent gullies, but less effective for detecting ephemeral gullies.

Soil erosion and sediment transport under climate change for Mera River, in Italian Alps of Valchiavenna

L. Maruffi et al.

Summary: The study estimated distributed soil erosion in Valchiavenna valley in the Rhaetian Alps, using the Dynamic-RUSLE model. Results showed potential increase in soil erosion, particularly in winter, and decrease in summer. Soil erosion studies help predict the impacts of future climate change on land.

Mediterranean badlands: Their driving processes and climate change futures

Estela Nadal-Romero et al.

Summary: Badlands are found worldwide in both dry and wet environments, and are characterized by intense erosion processes and extreme sediment yield. Climate change is expected to have direct and indirect effects on badland dynamics in the future, with potential improvements in water resources and vegetation growth.

Global impact of climate change on soil erosion and potential for adaptation through soil conservation

Joris P. C. Eekhout et al.

Summary: This study provides a global assessment of the impact of climate change on soil erosion and the potential for adaptation through land use change and soil conservation. The results show a global increasing trend in soil erosion, with the highest increase projected in semi-arid regions. Land use change characterized by agricultural expansion and deforestation aggravate the impact, while reforestation, agricultural land abandonment, and soil conservation practices can entirely compensate for the impact of climate change on soil erosion. Therefore, soil conservation and integrated land use planning are crucial.

Towards evaluating gully erosion volume and erosion rates in the Chambal badlands, Central India

Raveena Raj et al.

Summary: High-resolution multi-temporal digital elevation models (DEM) were used to quantify erosion volume and gully susceptibility mapping in the Chambal badlands, Central India. Machine learning models were used to predict gully erosion susceptibilities and volume for a larger study region, with satisfactory model performance. The model predicted that 40% of the area is highly affected by gully erosion, with the most severe gully development in the north-Central part.

Global rainfall erosivity projections for 2050 and 2070

Panos Panagos et al.

Summary: Rainfall erosivity, a major driver of soil and nutrient losses, is projected to increase globally in the future. This study presents future erosivity projections based on simulated climate models, providing valuable information for soil erosion, conservation, and climate change research. The results suggest a potential increase in global soil erosion rates by 30-66% by 2070.

Spatial cross-validation is not the right way to evaluate map accuracy

Alexandre M. J-C Wadoux et al.

Summary: Recent studies suggest that cross-validation statistics in mapping studies are often optimistic due to the neglect of spatial autocorrelation. A numerical experiment on above-ground biomass mapping demonstrates that standard cross-validation results in smaller bias compared to spatial cross-validation. Spatial cross-validation lacks theoretical foundation and should not be used for map accuracy assessment, while standard cross-validation is inadequate for clustered data. Design-unbiased accuracy assessment can be achieved through probability sampling and design-based inference without considering spatial autocorrelation.

Summary: This study aimed to predict severe soil erosion probability in the Mayurakshi river basin using LR, DT, and RF models. The analysis found that soil erosion is more likely in the undulating western parts of the basin compared to other sectors, with DT and RF models achieving higher prediction accuracy than LR model.

Measuring, modelling and managing gully erosion at large scales: A state of the art

Matthias Vanmaercke et al.

Summary: Soil erosion, particularly through the formation and expansion of gullies, is a significant process of land degradation that is often overlooked in regional to continental scale policies and management strategies. Despite limited ability to assess and simulate gully erosion, progress has been made in monitoring, modeling, and managing gully erosion. Recommendations for further research and policy development are provided based on a review of scientific articles and policy documents.
