Hair to blood mercury concentration ratios and a retrospective hair segmental mercury analysis in the Northwest Territories, Canada

Sara Packull-McCormick et al.

Summary: This study conducted human biomonitoring in First Nations communities in the Mackenzie Valley, Northwest Territories, Canada, analyzing concentrations of mercury in blood and hair samples. Results showed that most mercury levels were below health-based guidance values, with significant differences in hair to blood mercury ratios between regions. Seasonal patterns in hair mercury concentrations were found to be related to fish consumption, but not solely to total fish intake frequency.

Mediterranean Mercury Assessment 2022: An Updated Budget, Health Consequences, and Research Perspectives

Daniel Cossa et al.

Summary: Mercury contamination in the Mediterranean, especially in its methylated form, is higher than in other regions of Europe. Methylmercury accounts for a large proportion of the total mercury, and plays a significant role in the supply of mercury to the adjacent North Atlantic Ocean. The concentrations of methylmercury vary in different areas of the Mediterranean, with higher levels associated with low oxygen water masses. This variation is transferred through the food chain and affects the mercury content in top-predatory fish. Monitoring and mitigation strategies are necessary to protect Mediterranean populations from mercury exposure, while still allowing seafood consumption. There are still gaps in our understanding of mercury cycling in the Mediterranean, which requires further research.

Cadmium, total mercury, and lead in blood and associations with diet, sociodemographic factors, and smoking in Swedish adolescents

Pernilla Almerud et al.

Summary: This study assessed blood concentrations of toxic metals in Swedish adolescents and found that Cd concentrations were higher in girls, while Hg and Pb concentrations were higher in boys. Intake of meat was inversely associated with Cd levels, while intake of fish, eggs, meat, and vegetables were positively associated with Hg levels, and intake of dairy products was negatively associated with Pb levels. Additionally, smokers had higher concentrations of Cd and Pb.

Family Socioecological Correlates of Lifestyle Patterns in Early Childhood: A Cross-Sectional Study from the EDEN Mother-Child Cohort

Alexandra Descarpentrie et al.

Summary: This study identified unhealthy, healthy, and mixed lifestyle patterns in French preschoolers, with family factors and parent-child interactions being associated with these patterns. The findings suggest that addressing processes relevant to the parent-child dimension and structural barriers parents may encounter is crucial in tackling the potentially synergistic effect of lifestyle patterns on health.
