Identifying persistent, mobile and toxic (PMT) organic compounds detected in shale gas wastewater

Chen Huang et al.

Summary: Shale gas exploitation generates flowback and produced water (FPW) containing complex organic compounds, some of which are persistent, mobile and toxic (PMT) or very persistent and very mobile (vPvM). A literature review identified 162 organic compounds in FPW, with only 22 considered PMT/vPvM substances. Examples of PMT substances in FPW include anthracene, 1,4-dioxane, and 1,4-dichlorobenzene. Prioritizing risk management and monitoring of PMT/vPvM compounds in FPW is crucial for protecting regional water resources.

Application of bio-based phase change materials for effective heat management

Abbasali Abouei Mehrizi et al.

Summary: The sudden rise in gas and oil prices due to political issues, along with the need to reduce CO2 emissions to almost zero by 2050, has prompted scientists to propose renewable and sustainable strategies to replace fossil fuel sources or decrease energy demand. Utilizing thermal energy storage combined with renewable energy sources, particularly solar energy, is a popular approach in reducing peak energy demands. Phase change materials (PCMs), especially bio-based ones, have been studied for their application in various fields such as building heating and cooling, drug delivery, and electronic cooling.

Aquatic environmental fates and risks of benzotriazoles, benzothiazoles, and p-phenylenediamines in a catchment providing water to a megacity of China

Ruiling Zhang et al.

Summary: Wearing of vehicle parts can release potentially toxic chemicals into the environment, posing risks to wildlife and humans. This study investigated the occurrence, source, and risks of these chemicals in the water supply catchment of Guangzhou. The results showed that certain chemicals were predominant in surface water and groundwater, and unexpected concentrations were found. Additionally, a toxic ozonation product was extensively detected in source waters. This study provides important information for chemical management and highlights the need to address the risks associated with certain chemicals in the water supply.

Summary: This study developed analytical methods for 25 micropollutants and investigated their behavior in surface waters. Street run-off was identified as a potential additional discharge pathway for 1,3-diphenylguanidine. While some micropollutants could be well removed by different treatment processes, eight substances detected in surface waters may still pose challenges for drinking water suppliers.

Getting in control of persistent, mobile and toxic (PMT) and very persistent and very mobile (vPvM) substances to protect water resources: strategies from diverse perspectives

Sarah E. Hale et al.

Summary: PM/vPvM substances are important substances that require additional measures to protect water resources. There are knowledge gaps in their research and regulation, but strategies rooted in the Chemicals Strategy for Sustainability and recent advances in research and industrial stewardship can help address these gaps and control the impact of these substances. Source control and market incentives are identified as effective approaches to manage these substances.

Occurrence, Distribution, and Environmental Behavior of Persistent, Mobile, and Toxic (PMT) and Very Persistent and Very Mobile (vPvM) Substances in the Sources of German Drinking Water

Isabelle J. Neuwald et al.

Summary: Persistent, mobile, and toxic (PMT) and very persistent and very mobile (vPvM) substances pose a threat to aquatic environments and drinking water resources. The European Commission has prioritized these substances for regulatory action, proposing to include them in hazard classes. A study conducted in Germany found substantial contamination of German drinking water sources by known PMT/vPvM substances and detected the widespread presence of emerging substances.

Screening of Contaminants of Emerging Concern in Surface Water and Wastewater Effluents, Assisted by the Persistency-Mobility-Toxicity Criteria

Rosa Montes et al.

Summary: Contaminants of emerging concern (CECs) are a group of compounds with diverse origins that have recently garnered increasing environmental attention. The NOR-Water project aimed to identify the main CECs and their sources in the water environment of the Northern Portugal-Galicia transnational region. Through the use of liquid chromatography coupled to high resolution mass spectrometry (LC-HRMS), a total of 343 chemicals were tentatively identified in the analyzed samples, with 153 classified as persistent, mobile, and toxic (PMT) and 23 as very persistent and very mobile (vMvP).

Advances in suspect screening and non-target analysis of polar emerging contaminants in the environmental monitoring

Monika Paszkiewicz et al.

Summary: The production and use of chemicals are increasing worldwide, leading to an increasing number of potentially harmful chemicals entering the environment. Recent advances in analytical techniques have provided new opportunities for detecting a wide range of contaminants in water that cannot be detected by traditional targeted analysis methods. This review summarizes the advances in suspect screening analysis (SSA) and non-target analysis (NTA) of polar emerging contaminants (ECs) in various matrices over the past five years, including sampling and extraction approaches, GC or LC-HRMS analysis, data processing, evaluation, and reporting. The challenges and future trends in SSA and NTA monitoring of polar ECs are also discussed.

Characterization of key odor-active compounds in commercial high-salt liquid-state soy sauce by switchable GC/GC x GC-olfactometry-MS and sensory evaluation

Xiaojun Wang et al.

Summary: This study analyzed the odor compounds of five regular high-salt liquid-state soy sauces using a new switchable GC/GC x GC-olfactometry-mass spectrometry system. It identified several key odor-active compounds with high flavor dilution factors, and found that the cooked potato-like odor was the most important characteristic. The differences in odor characteristics lay in the balance of caramel-like/sweet, roasted/roasted nut-like, spicy/burnt, and unpleasant odor intensity, with fruity odor intensity being the weakest.
