Anthraquinone acted as a catalyst for the removal of triphenylmethane dye containing tertiary amino group: Characteristics and mechanism

Ying Gao et al.

Summary: In this study, anthraquinone (AQ) was found to act as an effective catalyst for the removal of triphenylmethane dye containing tertiary amino group (TDAG). The catalytic reactivity of AQ towards TDAG removal was found to be greater than hydro-quinone, which was supported by density functional theory (DFT) calculations. AQs exhibited a TDAG removal efficiency and rate of approximately 100% and 0.3583 min ???1 , respectively, within 20 min. The generation of superoxide radical (O 2 ??? ???) through the catalytic reduction of oxygen molecule (O 2 ) by AQ was found to contribute to the effective removal of TDAG. The electrophilic attack of the O 2 ??? ??? radical on TDAG was identified as the driving force for the dye degradation process. The study revealed the synergistic effects of H + and O 2 ??? ??? in significantly enhancing the rate and efficiency of dye removal, surpassing those achieved through persulfate oxidation.
