Alternation of nasopharyngeal microbiota in healthy youth is associated with environmental factors:implication for respiratory diseases

Hongcheng Zhao et al.

Summary: The nasopharynx is a key niche of the upper respiratory tract with a microbiota that when dysbiotic, is associated with respiratory diseases. Changes in environmental factors between spring and fall can influence the composition of the nasopharyngeal microbiota, significantly correlating to specific taxa.

Mind the gap: Performance metric evaluation in brain-age prediction

Ann-Marie G. de Lange et al.

Summary: Estimating age based on neuroimaging-derived data is a popular approach, but there is significant variation in model accuracy across studies. This study found that performance metrics for age prediction models depend on cohort and study-specific data characteristics. Age range, sample size, and age-bias correction all have an impact on the accuracy of the models. Furthermore, evaluating prediction variance and age-bias provides important information about underlying model attributes.

Air pollution and endocrine disruptors induce human microbiome imbalances: A systematic review of recent evidence and possible biological mechanisms

Sayed Esmaeil Mousavi et al.

Summary: A rich body of literature indicates that environmental factors interact with the human microbiome and influence its composition and functions contributing to the pathogenesis of diseases in distal sites of the body. This systematic review examines the scientific evidence on the effect of environmental toxicants, air pollutants and endocrine disruptors (EDCs), on the composition and diversity of human microbiota. The results suggest that exposure to environmental contaminants could change the diversity and abundance of resident microbiota, leading to microbial dysbiosis and disruption of microbiota-related immunological processes.

Sustainable ferrate oxidation: Reaction chemistry, mechanisms and removal of pollutants in wastewater

Afzal Ahmed Dar et al.

Summary: This review evaluates the application of ferrate (Fe(VI)) as a green coagulant and reactive oxidant for removing micro pollutants, particularly pharmaceutical pollutants in contaminated water. The study summarizes the nature, reactivity, and chemistry of Fe(VI) oxidation, as well as different mechanisms and reactive agents involved in contaminant degradation. Various Fe(VI) application methods and activating agents are discussed, along with innovative aspects to improve stability and effectiveness in degrading micro pollutants in water.

Exposure to ultrafine particles and oral flora, respiratory function, and biomarkers of inflammation: A panel study in children

Hongjin Li et al.

Summary: The study found that children exposed to ultrafine particles (UFPs) may suffer from inflammation, decreased lung function, and reduced buccal microbe diversity. Specifically, UFP exposure was associated with increased levels of FeNO and TNF-alpha, reduced lung function, and decreased diversity of buccal microflora.

Environmentally-Induced (Extrinsic) Skin Aging: Exposomal Factors and Underlying Mechanisms

Jean Krutmann et al.

Summary: The skin, as a barrier organ, is an ideal model for studying environmentally-induced aging. This review explains how exposure to specific exposomal factors can lead to extrinsic skin aging, involving interactions between these factors and genetic modifications, ultimately causing macromolecular damage and changes in fibroblasts in the dermal compartment of the skin.

Ambient Air Pollution: Health Hazards to Children

Heather L. Brumberg et al.

Summary: Ambient air pollution, caused by various sources such as vehicular traffic and coal-fired power plants, leads to climate change which in turn worsens the health effects of air pollution. Infants and children are especially vulnerable to its impacts, which include respiratory diseases, reduced lung function, and increased asthma incidence. Efforts to improve air quality, such as increasing public transportation use and implementing regulations, have shown positive effects on community health.

Yihan Wu et al.

Summary: This study found that short-term exposure to PM2.5 is associated with changes in airway inflammation, lung function, and bacterial community diversity in children. Among the PM2.5 constituents, organic carbon, elemental carbon, NO3-, and NH4+ showed the strongest associations with these effects.

Recent Increases in Air Pollution: Evidence and Implications for Mortality

Karen Clay et al.

Summary: After a decline from 2009 to 2016, the average annual fine particulate matter (PM2.5) in monitored counties in the United States increased from 2016 to 2018. Possible reasons for this increase include economic activity, wildfires, and reduced enforcement of the Clean Air Act. The health implications are significant, leading to 9,700 premature deaths and $89 billion in damages.
