Natural enrichment of Cd and Tl in the bark of trees from a rural watershed devoid of point sources of metal contamination

William Shotyk et al.

Summary: This study investigates the bioaccumulation of Cd and Tl in beaver tissue by examining the enrichment of these metals in vegetation. The results show that Cd is enriched in soils while Tl is depleted. However, soil processes alone cannot explain the high concentrations of Cd in certain plant species. The concentrations of Cd and Tl in water are used to estimate their bioavailability in soil solutions. The findings suggest that many plant species, particularly willow and poplar, preferentially accumulate Cd over other essential micronutrients. This has implications for using beavers as biomonitoring indicators of environmental contamination and for the consumption of bark for traditional food and medicine.
