Estimating the amount of cadmium and lead in the polluted soil using artificial intelligence models

Ahmad Bazoobandi et al.

Summary: Contamination issues, particularly heavy metals such as cadmium and lead, are important and unsolved problems connected to human and environmental health. This study estimated lead and cadmium levels in soil using multiple models. The results showed that the artificial neural network model outperformed the adaptive neuro-fuzzy inference system model in estimating lead and cadmium. Organic carbon and phosphorus were found to have the most and least significant effects on the estimation of lead and cadmium parameters, respectively.

Tossapon Katongtung et al.

Summary: Machine learning techniques were used to predict biocrude yields and higher heating values from hydrothermal liquefaction of wet biomass and wastes. An extreme gradient boosting model showed the best prediction accuracy with temperature being the most influential feature. Feedstock characteristics contributed more than 55% to the model, and individual effects and interactions of the most important features were also examined for better understanding of the system.

MgO-loaded nitrogen and phosphorus self-doped biochar: High-efficient adsorption of aquatic Cu2+, Cd2+, and Pb2+ and its remediation efficiency on heavy metal contaminated soil

Xin Qi et al.

Summary: In this study, MgO-loaded fish scale biochar (MgO-FB) was synthesized and used for the adsorption of aquatic Cu2+, Cd2+, and Pb2+ as well as the immobilization of heavy metals in soils. The results showed that MgO-FB had excellent adsorption capacities for Cu2+, Cd2+, and Pb2+ and could maintain this capacity under various environmental disturbances. The enhanced adsorption capacity was attributed to the hydroxyapatite components and the MgO micro-nanoparticles on MgO-FB, as well as the coordination and complexation with different functional groups. MgO-FB also effectively reduced the contents of available Cu, Cd, and Pb in soils. In conclusion, MgO-FB has great potential for the remediation of heavy metal contaminated waters and soils.

Simultaneous stabilization of Sb and As co-contaminated soil by FeMg modified biochar

Yonghong Jiao et al.

Summary: Co-contamination of metalloids in soils poses a serious threat to ecological stability and human health. A novel FeMg modified porous biochar (3FMKBC) was prepared and its stabilizing efficiency in aqueous solutions and real soils was investigated. The optimal removal performance for Sb(V) and As(V) was achieved with a 1/3 mol ratio of Fe/Mg. The 3FMKBC showed potential in limiting the migration and bioavailability of Sb and As, indicating its prospect as a material for the stabilization of metalloid co-contamination.

Qinghui Tang et al.

Summary: This study aimed to predict pyrolytic gas yield and compositions based on pyrolysis conditions and biomass characteristics using machine learning algorithms and feature reduction. The results showed that six features were sufficient for accurate yield prediction, while compositions only required three. The study revealed the higher relative contribution of pyrolysis conditions to yield, CO2, and H2 compared to biomass characteristics.

(Im)mobilization of arsenic, chromium, and nickel in soils via biochar: A meta-analysis

Zahra Arabi et al.

Summary: Biochar shows promise in immobilizing trace elements in contaminated soils, but the effect on arsenic mobilization may be negative while it efficiently immobilizes chromium and nickel. Factors such as pyrolysis conditions, organic matter content, and feedstock influence the effectiveness of biochar in immobilizing trace elements in contaminated soils.
