Shale weathering profiles show Hg sequestration along a New York-Tennessee transect

Justin B. Richardson

Summary: Shale-derived soils have high clay, organic matter, and secondary Fe oxide content, leading to sequestration of Hg. However, they can also be Hg-rich due to marine formation. The study found that organic matter plays a significant role in stabilizing atmospheric Hg in these soils.

Distribution of mercury in foliage, litter and soil profiles in forests of the Qinling Mountains, China

Honghong Ma et al.

Summary: This study investigated the concentrations, distribution, and influential factors of mercury (Hg) in the forests of the Qinling Mountains in central China. The results showed relatively low levels of Hg in foliage, litter, organic soil, and mineral soil compared to subtropical forests in Southwest China. The distribution of Hg in foliage showed no clear spatial pattern, while the distribution in litter and organic soil varied depending on tree species and environmental parameters. The concentration of Hg in soils was positively correlated with organic carbon, nitrogen, and sulfur. The accumulation of organic matter in high-altitude and low-temperature areas effectively reduced Hg loss from biogeochemical cycling processes.

Impacts of Extreme Weather on Mercury Uptake and Storage in Subtropical Forest Ecosystems

Wei Yuan et al.

Summary: As climate change accelerates, extreme weather events become more severe and frequent. This study analyzed the datasets of mercury (Hg) stored in two subtropical evergreen forests over a decade to understand the impacts of extreme weather on Hg sequestration in forest ecosystems. The results showed that droughts and snowstorms significantly disrupted Hg accumulation in litterfall and soils.

The role of afforestation species as a driver of Hg accumulation in organic horizons of forest soils from a Mediterranean mountain area in SW Europe

M. Mendez-Lopez et al.

Summary: This study assessed variations in total Hg contents and accumulation in the soil organic horizons of a forest area in NE Portugal, and found that tree species and organic matter quality significantly influence the fate of Hg in forest soils. Coniferous species showed higher Hg accumulation in the organic horizons, which may increase the risk of Hg mobilization due to wildfires and forest management practices.

Needle age and precipitation as drivers of Hg accumulation and deposition in coniferous forests from a southwestern European Atlantic region

Melissa Mendez-Lopez et al.

Summary: This study assessed the impact of needle age and precipitation on the accumulation and deposition of mercury (Hg) in forest ecosystems. The results showed that Hg concentration increased with needle age, and precipitation and needle age were identified as the main factors influencing Hg accumulation. Understanding the importance of these factors is crucial for accurately assessing regional-scale forest Hg pools and their potential consequences for ecosystem functioning.

Summary: As climate change accelerates, extreme weather events become more severe and frequent. This study analyzed the datasets of decade-long observation to understand the impacts of extreme weather on the sequestration of atmospheric mercury in subtropical evergreen forests. The results show that droughts and snowstorms significantly disturb mercury accumulation in litterfall and soils, highlighting the increased unpredictability of mercury accumulation in terrestrial ecosystems due to accelerated climate change.

Patterning total mercury distribution in coastal podzolic soils from an Atlantic area: Influence of pedogenetic processes and soil components

A. Gomez-Armesto et al.

Summary: Soils serve as the main reservoir for mercury (Hg) in terrestrial ecosystems, with different patterns of Hg distribution observed in Podzols based on atmospheric deposition and podzolization intensity. Dissolved organic matter plays a key role in carrying Hg in surface horizons, while metal-humus complexes and oxyhydroxides immobilize Hg in deeper soil layers. Principal component regression analysis successfully predicted Hg distribution through soil organic matter and Al and Fe oxyhydroxides in Podzols.

Soil properties influencing Hg vertical pattern in temperate forest podzols

Antia Gomez-Armesto et al.

Summary: Mercury content in podzols is mainly derived from the atmosphere rather than the parent material, with organic matter and aluminum and iron compounds being the key soil properties influencing soil formation. Predicted mercury levels in different soil horizons can be described by various specific variables, while the movement and precipitation of mercury in the soil is influenced by a complex interplay of biogeochemical reactions.

A spatial assessment of mercury content in the European Union topsoil

Cristiano Ballabio et al.

Summary: Mapping of surface soil mercury concentrations at continental scale using Deep Neural Network models revealed an increase in mercury concentrations with latitude and altitude in European soils. The study found correlations between soil mercury concentrations and vegetation activity, NDVI, and soil organic carbon content, indicating the importance of atmospheric uptake by plants and soil organic matter on mercury distribution. Additionally, the research identified hotspots of mercury contamination, with some associated with mining areas and others potentially related to unmined geological mercury or industrial pollution.
