Visual inspection of acidic pH and bisulfite in white wine using a colorimetric and fluorescent probe

Dan Zhang et al.

Summary: In this paper, a hemicyanine-based colorimetric and fluorescent probe Hcy-Py was designed and synthesized for the selective detection of bisulfite. The probe-loaded paper strips showed distinct color changes under both natural light and UV lamp in solutions with different pH values and concentrations of bisulfite. The visual detection of acidic pH and bisulfite in white wine without involving any sophisticated instrument or professional skill was successfully demonstrated.

Ratiometric fluorometric detection of Cu2+ through a hybrid nanoprobe composed of N-doped CQDs and L-cysteine-capped CdSe/ZnS QDs

Zhaofa Li et al.

Summary: The present work developed a new dual-emission responsive ratiometric fluorescent hybrid nanoprobe using a mixture of N-Doped Carbon Quantum Dots (N-CQDs) and Lcysteine-capped CdSe/ZnS Quantum Dots (Lcys-CdSe/ZnS QDs). The addition of Cu2+ quenched the fluorescence of Lcys-CdSe/ZnS QDs while N-CQDs remained fluorescent. The nanoprobe showed high sensitivity and accuracy for Cu2+ detection in natural water samples.

Detection and quantification of heavy metals in blood and milk of Amazon river dolphin (Inia geoffrensis) (Cetartiodactyla: Iniidae) using wavelength-dispersive X-ray fluorescence spectrometry

Claudia Candida Silva et al.

Summary: This study used wavelength-dispersive X-ray fluorescence (WD-XRF) spectrometry to detect and quantify heavy metals in blood and milk samples of a free-ranging female Amazon river dolphin. The WD-XRF method detected and quantified 14 elements, with 13 in the blood samples and 14 in the milk samples. Some heavy metals, like mercury, were not detected, suggesting the possibility of non-contaminated samples. It is recommended to use different analytical methods in future analyses and the high concentrations of certain metals in the samples raise health risks for the river dolphins.

Ion-Imprinted Polymer-on-a-Sensor for Copper Detection

Zeynep Gerdan et al.

Summary: The accumulation of metal ions in the body is caused by human activities and industrial uses. Copper, as the third most abundant ion found in the human body, is essential for health but high doses can lead to diseases. Different types of sensors are used to detect metal ions, and in this study, an ion-imprinted polymer-integrated plasmonic sensor was developed for real-time selective detection of copper ions.

Detection and imaging of Hg(II) in vivo using glutathione-functionalized gold nanoparticles

Gufeng Li et al.

Summary: Functionalized gold nanoparticles (GNPs) have been widely used in sensing applications, especially for detecting metal ions. This article describes the use of 13 nm GNPs functionalized by glutathione (GSH) and conjugated with a rhodamine 6G derivative (Rh6G2) to detect Hg(II) in cells. The detection strategy is based on the ion-catalyzed hydrolysis of Rh6G2, resulting in a significant change in the fluorescence of GNPs-GSH-Rh6G2 from an OFF to an ON state.
