Organochlorine residues in muscle of European eels (Anguilla anguilla) from four Spanish Mediterranean wetlands and coastal lagoons

Alonso Perez-Vegas et al.

Summary: European eels are endangered and chlorine organic compounds are important pollutants for marine species. Data on contaminants in eel stocks remain incomplete, so the presence of organochlorine pesticides (OCPs) and polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs) in eel muscle from four Spanish Mediterranean ecosystems were analyzed. The results indicated the need for further studies, especially in areas with good ecological status.

A national-scale distribution of organochlorine pesticides (OCPs) in cropland soils and major types of food crops in China: Co-occurrence and associated risks

Lu Chen et al.

Summary: Organochlorine pesticides (OCPs) are persistent organic pollutants (POPs) that resist degradation in the environment. China's cropland systems still contain detectable levels of OCPs. The spatial distribution of OCPs and their associated ecological and health risks, as well as the relationship between OCP levels in cropland soils and crops, are not fully understood. This study conducted a national-scale characterization of OCPs in cropland soils and food crops in China, revealing the dominance of DDTs in cropland systems and the contamination of peanuts and rice with various OCPs. The presence of OCPs in China's cropland systems raises concerns for both the environment and human health.

Large-scale spatiotemporal variations, sources, and risk assessment of banned OCPs and PAHs in suspended particulate matter from the Negro river, Argentina

Andres H. Arias et al.

Summary: This study assessed the levels, sources, and potential biological risks of organochlorine pesticides (OCPs) and polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) in the water of the Negro River in Argentina. It found an increasing trend of OCP accumulation in the lower valley and widespread presence of PAHs along the river, particularly in areas with anthropogenic activity. PAHs posed a high risk to biota, highlighting the need for mitigation measures.

Evaluating the fate and potential health risks of organochlorine pesticides and triclosan in soil, sediment, and water from Asa Dam River, Ilorin Kwara State, Nigeria

Gbadebo Clement Adeyinka et al.

Summary: The study aimed to assess the pollution level of the Asa River in Nigeria and analyze the health risks it poses. Results showed low levels of organochlorine pesticides in sediment, soil, and water samples. The health risk assessment indicated a higher risk for children than adults, and the cancer risk ranged from low to moderate for humans. The ecological effects of the pesticides were rare to occur except for hexachlorocyclohexane.

Jean-Philippe Antignac et al.

Summary: This study investigated the association between OCPs concentrations in PPAT and prostate cancer aggressiveness, and found significant ethno-geographic variation in exposure. Most OCPs were positively correlated with age and BMI, while mirex showed an inverse association with aggressive features of PCa.

Spatial-temporal occurrence and sources of organochlorine pesticides in the sediments of the largest deep lake (Lake Fuxian) in China

Chuanhai Hu et al.

Summary: Compared with shallow lakes, less attention has been paid on pollutions in deep lakes. Lake Fuxian is the largest deep lake and an important water resource in China. However, the knowledge on organochlorine pesticides (OCPs) in sediments of Lake Fuxian was rare.

First report of organochlorine pesticides (OCPs) in coral tissues and the surrounding air-seawater system from the South China Sea: Distribution, source, and environmental fate

Yaru Kang et al.

Summary: This study elucidated the levels, fate, and potential sources of 22 organochlorine pesticides (OCPs) in coral tissues and the surrounding air-seawater system from the South China Sea (SCS) for the first time. The atmospheric OCPs were mainly influenced by continental air mass origins, while coastal seawater had relatively higher concentrations of OCPs, possibly due to coastal pollution inputs. Corals exhibited a migration pattern of OCPs from atmosphere to ocean, with higher bioaccumulation ability for OCPs compared to other sources in the SCS.

Organochlorine pesticides and polychlorinated biphenyls from a greenhouse area on the Mediterranean coast of Turkey: Distribution, air-soil exchange, enantiomeric signature, and source implications

Emine Can-Guven et al.

Summary: The study investigated levels, seasonal variation, and air-soil exchange of 22 organochlorine pesticides and 15 polychlorinated biphenyls in an agricultural area of Turkey, also providing insights into the enantiomeric signatures of chiral OCPs. The results showed lower or similar contamination levels compared to global studies in agricultural regions, with DDT and its metabolites, as well as endosulfan isomers, being the most prevalent chemicals. The enantiomer fractions of o,p'-DDT in air samples suggest re-volatilization of equally depleted enantiomers or fresh input of racemic o,p'-DDT to the air, with net deposition being the dominant mechanism.

Accumulation of organochlorine pesticide (OCP) residues in surface water and sediment from the Iznik Lake in Turkey

Fatih Aydin et al.

Summary: This study evaluated the concentrations of organochlorinated pesticides (OCPs) in the water column and sediments of Iznik Lake. The results showed variations in OCP residues across different sampling sites, with some concentrations exceeding the maximum limits set by the World Health Organization. The highest concentrations of OCPs were observed in sediments during summer. The presence of high OCP levels in the waters of Iznik Lake, where agricultural activities have been increasing, is a serious concern that requires regulatory actions.

Ecological impact of organochlorine pesticides consortium on autochthonous microbial community in agricultural soil

Chinyere Christiana Egbe et al.

Summary: The study reveals that OCPs-impacted soil is contaminated with 15 OCPs and suffers from nitrate and phosphorous deficiencies, with 10 of the OCPs posing severe ecological risks. Key microbiomes in the impacted soil include Enterobacteriaceae and Mortierellaceae, with the low abundance of Nitrospirae species and extinction of Glomeromycota suggesting serious toxicological consequences of the OCPs.

Distribution and partitioning of pyrethroid insecticides in agricultural lands: Critical influencing factors

Tao Tang et al.

Summary: A large-scale field study in Southeast China revealed that pyrethroid residues were widely detected in both soil and water, with crop type and season significantly impacting the distribution of these residues. Crop type was found to have the largest influence on the variance of pyrethroid distribution, followed by seasonal differences, providing new insights for insecticide control and ecological safety in agricultural lands.

DDT, Chlordane, and Hexachlorobenzene in the Air of the Pearl River Delta Revisited: A Tale of Source, History, and Monsoon

Lele Tian et al.

Summary: Despite being banned for over three decades, organochlorine pesticides (OCPs) have not significantly decreased in concentration. This study in China's Pearl River Delta found that DDT had higher concentrations in summer than winter, chlordane showed less seasonal variation, and HCB was higher in winter. These findings indicate that geographic and anthropogenic factors, such as source, history, and air circulation pattern, play a significant role in the regional fate of OCP compounds.
