Simultaneous bioremediation of phenol and tellurite by Lysinibacillus sp. EBL303 and characterization of biosynthesized Te nanoparticles

Firooz Hosseini et al.

Summary: Aromatic compounds and metalloid oxyanions are commonly found in the environment, and their high toxicity poses significant threats to life. A halotolerant bacterium, Lysinibacillus sp. EBL303, has been identified as capable of effectively remediating phenol and tellurite pollutants. The biosynthesized tellurium nanoparticles (TeNPs) produced by this bacterium showed promising properties for potential applications in environmental remediation and the nanotechnology industry.

The effect of organic carbon form and concentration on fungal selenite reduction

Mary C. Sabuda et al.

Summary: Fungi play a crucial role in the transformation of carbon and selenium, and increasing carbon concentrations can enhance selenium removal. Different fungi may prefer different carbon sources, and carbon consumption continues despite the presence of selenium. This study provides insights into the coupling between carbon and selenium biogeochemical cycling and can contribute to the improvement of selenium bioremediation strategies.

Characterization of the differentiated reduction of selenite and tellurite by a halotolerant bacterium: Process and mechanism

Manman Cheng et al.

Summary: In this study, the reductive processes and mechanisms of Se(IV) and Te(IV) were investigated using a marine bacterium Shewanella sp. CNZ-1. The results showed that CNZ-1 can effectively reduce Se(IV) and Te(IV) under saline conditions. The reduction of Se(IV) was enzyme-based, while the reduction of Te(IV) was more like a detoxification process. These findings expanded our understanding of the fate of Se(IV) and Te(IV) in the saline environment and provided guidance for pollution control.

Tolerance, Adaptation, and Cell Response Elicited by Micromonospora sp. Facing Tellurite Toxicity: A Biological and Physical-Chemical Characterization

Elena Piacenza et al.

Summary: The intense use and improper disposal of tellurium in industrial applications have led to its accumulation in the environment. This study fills the knowledge gap in microbial processing of tellurite and provides a suitable strategy for circular economy by exploring the microbial biotransformation of tellurium. The Micromonospora strain investigated in this study shows promising cell tolerance, adaptation, and response to tellurite, making it a valuable asset for biotechnological purposes.

Tellurite and Selenite: how can these two oxyanions be chemically different yet so similar in the way they are transformed to their metal forms by bacteria?

Janine Kessi et al.

Summary: This opinion review discusses the microbiology and biological differences between tellurite and selenite oxyanions. It explores the challenges in understanding the uptake transport mechanisms of these anions and the controversies surrounding their reduction to nanomaterials. The review also highlights the importance of glutathione and thioredoxin chemistry in relation to the electron transport chain system. Despite the progress made, there are still many unanswered questions and exciting research directions to explore.
