Effects of biofilm on metal adsorption behavior and microbial community of microplastics

Wang Qiongjie et al.

Summary: This study found that biofilm can enhance the adsorption capacity of microplastics to copper and lead, while the influence of UV radiation is minimal. According to modeling analysis, adsorption on V-PS is dominated by intra-particle diffusion, while the adsorption rate on UV-PS and Bio-PS is mainly controlled by binding diffusion. Bio-PS has the strongest adsorption capacity and the adsorption mechanisms include physical adsorption, chemisorption, and biosorption.

Exposure to nanopolystyrene and its 4 chemically modified derivatives at predicted environmental concentrations causes differently regulatory mechanisms in nematode Caenorhabditis elegans

Man Qu et al.

Summary: This study compared the toxicity of nanopolystyrene and its chemically modified derivatives using a nematode model. The results showed that different modifications had different effects on lifespan, body length, locomotion behavior, and gut barrier of the nematodes. The toxicity ranking was determined as PS-NH2 > PS-SOOOH > PS-COOH > PS > PS-PEG. Additionally, evidence was presented to support the role of oxidative stress and activation of antioxidant molecules in reversing the adverse effects induced by these nanoparticles.

Effects of exposure of polyethylene microplastics to air, water and soil on their adsorption behaviors for copper and tetracycline

Yuan Wang et al.

Summary: The adsorption behaviors of Cu(II) and tetracycline (TC) on polyethylene microplastics exposed to different environments varied, with marine- and soil-exposed microplastics showing higher adsorption and stabilization capacities. The adsorption isotherms were better described by Langmuir model for water- and soil-exposed microplastics, while kinetic experiments revealed differing intra-particle diffusion effects. Additionally, the glycosyl composition and density functional theory analysis suggested that biofilm components and metal-antibiotic complexes played a role in the adsorption process.

Blumea laciniata protected Hep G2 cells and Caenorhabditis elegans against acrylamide-induced toxicity via insulin/IGF-1 signaling pathway

Lijun Zhou et al.

Summary: In this study, the extract from Blumea laciniata (EBL) was used to protect Hep G2 cells and Caenorhabditis elegans against acrylamide (AC) toxicity. The results showed that EBL could mitigate the toxic effects of AC by reducing ROS levels, activating antioxidant enzyme expression, and enhancing cell or worm survival time. Additionally, EBL exhibited a protective effect via the Insulin/IGF-1 signaling pathway.

Transgenerational neurotoxicity of polystyrene microplastics induced by oxidative stress in Caenorhabditis elegans

Haibo Chen et al.

Summary: This study found that maternal exposure to PS-MPs can result in the transgenerational neurotoxicity in C. elegans, with oxidative stress playing a key role in this process. Furthermore, the upregulation of oxidative stress-related genes across generations may be involved in regulating neurotoxicity in C. elegans.

Chronic exposure of zearalenone inhibits antioxidant defense and results in aging-related defects associated with DAF-16/FOXO in Caenorhabditis elegans

Chi-Wei Huang et al.

Summary: The study found that ZEN significantly decreased locomotive behaviors in C. elegans. Lifespan and aging markers were also adversely affected by ZEN, which increased ROS levels and downregulated antioxidant genes. Long-term exposure to ZEN induced aging-related decline in C. elegans, associated with oxidative stress and inhibition of antioxidant defense.
