Heavy metals levels in road dust from Muscat, Oman: relationship with traffic volumes, and ecological and health risk assessments

Hilal K. Al-Shidi et al.

Summary: The study found significant variations in heavy metal concentrations in road dust samples from Muscat, Oman. Mercury and arsenic showed increasing trends with traffic volume and were correlated to each other, suggesting vehicular emissions as their source. The ecological risk index for selected metals was considerable, but the hazard index was within the safe threshold. Overall, the study indicates minor health risks to the general public, with children being relatively more vulnerable to the impact of metals associated with dust.

Unravelling biogeochemical drivers of methylmercury production in an Arctic fen soil and a bog soil

Lijie Zhang et al.

Summary: The research investigates the main microbial methylators responsible for MeHg production in tundra soils, finding that sulfate-reducing bacteria (SRB) and methanogens play key roles in Hg(II) methylation, depending on the availability of sulfate and potential syntrophic metabolisms between them. The study highlights the importance of understanding biogeochemical drivers of MeHg production in Arctic tundra soils to address potential threats to the ecosystem.

Mercury spatiality and mobilization in roadside soils adjacent to a savannah ecological reserve

Ygor O. S. Rodrigues et al.

Summary: Mercury, a persistent environmental pollutant, originates from anthropic activities such as fuel fossil emissions and industrial activities. In a study conducted in Central Brazil, it was found that road-traffic mercury emissions can lead to high mercury concentrations in soil, especially near the roadsides, gradually decreasing with distance.

Socioeconomic cost of dredge boat gold mining in the Tapajos basin, eastern Amazon

Julia Queiroz et al.

Summary: With the rapid expansion of artisanal small-scale gold mining in the Brazilian Amazon, this study developed a method to assess the socio-environmental costs of dredge boat mining and conducted an empirical study in the Tapaj'os watershed. The research found that the total socioeconomic cost of dredge boat mining in 2020 was $6.4 million, providing a more accurate economic valuation of illegal dredge boat mining.

Mercury distribution in different environmental matrices in aquatic systems of abandoned gold mines, Western Colombia: Focus on human health

Harry Gutierrez-Mosquera et al.

Summary: The study assessed total mercury (THg), methylmercury (MeHg) levels in various environmental compartments in abandoned gold mining ponds (AGMPs) and mining areas in Western Colombia to evaluate the present environmental conditions and human health risks. The findings indicate potential chronic effects due to elevated THg levels, particularly in fish, posing a threat to human health. Monitoring of mercury species in different compartments is recommended to mitigate environmental hazards in the region.

Potentially toxic elements contamination in surface sediment and indigenous aquatic macrophytes of the Bahmanshir River, Iran: Appraisal of phytoremediation capability

Hamed Haghnazar et al.

Summary: The study in Bahmanshir River of Iran revealed that sediment contamination was primarily caused by municipal wastewater/vehicular pollution, with contributions from weathering/industrial/agricultural activities. Moderate pollution levels for Pb and Cu were indicated, along with low to moderate contamination and toxicity overall. Typha latifolia L. demonstrated good phytostabilization capability for Cd, Cu, and Pb, and phytoextraction capacity for Zn, making it a potential candidate for bioaccumulation in the study area.

Claudio E. T. Parente et al.

Summary: The collapse of the B1 iron ore tailings dam in Brazil caused 270 deaths and released a large amount of tailings into the environment, affecting the Paraopeba River and aquatic biota. The study found that most elements in sediment had lower concentrations downstream, while aquatic biota showed higher concentrations, indicating an increase in element bioavailability.
