Independent and combined associations of urinary arsenic exposure and serum sex steroid hormones among 6-19-year old children and adolescents in NHANES 2013-2016

Yuanli Zhang et al.

Summary: Arsenic exposure may disrupt sex steroid hormones, causing endocrine disruption. Limited and inconsistent human evidence exists, especially for children and adolescents. A cross-sectional analysis of data from the NHANES showed positive associations between total arsenic and arsenic metabolites with sex steroid hormones, as well as negative associations with sex hormone-binding globulin. Different arsenic metabolites had varying weights, and exposure to arsenic, either alone or in mixtures, was found to alter sex steroid hormone levels in children and adolescents.

Summary: Many insecticides and fungicides can disrupt the endocrine system in placenta, inhibiting the activity of a key enzyme called HSD3B1. Triclosan, triflumizole, and oxine were found to effectively inhibit the activity of HSD3B1 in both human and rat placenta.

Per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances in the environment

Marina G. Evich et al.

Summary: PFAS has become a symbol of environmental contamination, attracting public, scientific, and regulatory concern. These compounds are globally distributed through atmospheric and aqueous releases, and they accumulate in biota through multiple pathways. Efforts to remediate PFAS-contaminated matrices are still in their early stages, with a focus on research targeting drinking water.

Determinants of serum half-lives for linear and branched perfluoroalkyl substances after long-term high exposure-A study in Ronneby, Sweden

Ying Li et al.

Summary: The study in Ronneby, Sweden found that eight PFAS were increased in the residents, with PFOA and different PFOS isomers having shorter half-lives. Key determinants of a shorter half-life were younger age, better kidney function, and female sex during the fertile period. Additionally, markers of gut inflammation and reduced permeability were possibly associated with a shorter half-life.

Per- and Polyfluoroalkyl Substance Toxicity and Human Health Review: Current State of Knowledge and Strategies for Informing Future Research

Suzanne E. Fenton et al.

Summary: Reports on the impacts of per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) on the environment and human health have increased substantially in peer-reviewed literature. Epidemiological studies have shown associations between exposure to specific PFAS and various health effects, and further research is needed to understand differences in responses between sexes, species, and life stages. More contemporary approaches such as read-across, molecular dynamics, and protein modeling are proposed to accelerate the development of toxicity information on PFAS, as well as the need for precaution to protect human health given the known effects of certain PFAS compounds.

Distribution, behaviour, bioavailability and remediation of poly- and per-fluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) in solid biowastes and biowaste-treated soil

Nanthi Bolan et al.

Summary: Aqueous film-forming foam and biowastes are major sources of PFAS in soil, with plant uptake of PFAS through soil application of biowastes being a pathway for animal and human exposure. Remediation of PFAS in biowastes and soils treated with these biowastes can be achieved through various methods including prevention through source control, soil washing, phytoremediation, immobilization, and destruction. This review presents the distribution, bioavailability, and remediation of PFAS in soil receiving solid biowastes such as biosolids, composts, and manure.

Per- and Polyfluoroalkyl Substances (PFAS) in Breast Milk: Concerning Trends for Current-Use PFAS

Guomao Zheng et al.

Summary: This study found that a variety of PFAS are present in breast milk from mothers in the United States, including both legacy and current-use compounds, potentially exposing nursing infants. Perfluorooctanesulfonic acid and perfluorooctanoic acid were the most common PFAS in the samples, while the detection frequency and concentration of short-chain PFAS are increasing.

Early-Life Exposure to Per- and Poly-Fluorinated Alkyl Substances and Growth, Adiposity, and Puberty in Children: A Systematic Review

Yun Jeong Lee et al.

Summary: Studies have found that prenatal PFAS exposure may impair fetal growth, while postnatal exposure within the first 2 years of life is negatively associated with height and weight. Prenatal PFAS exposure shows no associations with infant weight but has negative associations with adiposity. Evidence for the effects of early-life PFAS exposure on pubertal development or sex hormone levels is limited. While research suggests possible effects of PFAS exposures on early-life growth, adiposity, and puberty, current human evidence is limited, warranting further investigation into their effects on physical development.
