On triangle inequalities of correlation-based distances for gene expression profiles

Jiaxing Chen et al.

Summary: This study proposes a distance function called d(r) as an alternative to the absolute correlation distance. It is proven that d(r) satisfies the triangle inequality when rho represents Pearson correlation, Spearman correlation, or Cosine similarity. Experimental results show that d(r) performs more robustly in gene clustering and sample clustering compared to the absolute correlation distance.

Dissecting integrated indices of multiple biomarker responses: Think before use

Summary: The multiple biomarker approach is effective for studying aquatic organisms' responses to contaminants. Integrated indices have been used to summarize multiple biomarker responses for easier communication of research findings, but they are considered unnecessary and changes in summarizing multiple biomarker results are recommended.

Effects of graphene oxide nanosheets in the polychaete Hediste diversicolor: Behavioural, physiological and biochemical responses

Adilia Pires et al.

Summary: This study reveals that the presence of GO nanosheets can have negative effects on the behavior, physiology, and biochemistry of benthic organisms such as H. diversicolor, suggesting that the increase of this engineered nanomaterial in the environment may disturb the benthic community and have repercussions on estuarine ecosystems.

Microplastics cause neurotoxicity and decline of enzymatic activities in important bioturbator Hediste diversicolor

Barbara Urban-Malinga et al.

Summary: Research shows that microplastics may cause neurotoxicity in H. diversicolor, resulting in a decrease in whole-body acetylcholinesterase activity. Worms exposed to microplastics also exhibited reduced antioxidant enzyme activity, but no other biochemical effects were observed. Few microplastic microspheres were found in the worms exposed to spiked sediments.

Rewriting results sections in the language of evidence

Stefanie Muff et al.

Summary: Despite criticism, the black-or-white null-hypothesis significance testing with an arbitrary P-value cutoff remains the standard way to report scientific findings. However, a lack of knowledge about suitable alternatives hampers progress. This study suggests using a language of evidence as a simpler and more intuitive alternative, which allows for a more nuanced approach in communicating scientific findings.

Interactive Effects of Warming and Pollutants on Marine and Freshwater Invertebrates

Khuong Dinh et al.

Summary: This review focuses on the interactive effects between warming and contaminants in freshwater and marine invertebrates. The combination of warming and pollutants can have additive or non-additive effects, depending on various factors such as taxa, life stage, exposure level and duration, and the number of exposed generations. Traditional contaminants generally have synergistic effects when combined with warming at the individual level. Multigenerational exposure and contemporary evolution can shift the interaction between warming and contaminants towards antagonism.

Seasonal dissolved copper speciation in the Strait of Georgia, British Columbia, Canada

Lori-jon C. Waugh et al.

Summary: The Strait of Georgia is influenced by both ocean and freshwater, with Cu concentration controlled by mixing dynamics and buffering effects of Cu-binding ligands. The results suggest that the marine life in the Strait of Georgia is not threatened by Cu toxicity due to the presence of effective Cu-binding ligands. Factors such as ligand class, concentration, and temperature play a significant role in Cu speciation.

Local stressors mask the effects of warming in freshwater ecosystems

Olivia F. Morris et al.

Summary: The study found that the impacts of climate warming on freshwater ecosystems are usually determined by the stronger stressor, especially when this stressor is associated with human land use. Predicting the effects of multiple stressors depends on the identity of the stressors and the asymmetry of their effects.

Summary: Organic UV filters pose a threat to marine organisms, but previous studies have only focused on a small number of substances. This study examined the effects of a non-lipophilic UV filter commonly found in the Baltic Sea on blue mussels. The results showed that the filter had an impact on the mussel's antioxidant response, energy storage, and cell death processes.

Do the graphene nanoflakes pose a potential threat to the polychaete Hediste diversicolor?

Barbara Urban-Malinga et al.

Summary: The study found limited toxic effects of graphene on the marine polychaete Hediste diversicolor, with the activation of defense mechanisms observed at the early stage of exposure. Significant inter-individual variability in the activities of certain biomarkers was found at the end of the long-term experiment, and the polychaetes buried deeper in sediments containing graphene exhibited escape and avoidance behavior.

Identifying conserved polychaete molecular markers of metal exposure: Comparative analyses using the Alitta virens (Annelida, Lophotrochozoa) transcriptome

Amaia Green Etxabe et al.

Summary: Research indicates that some current markers used for polychaetes may need to be abandoned, while caution should be exercised with others as different polychaete species appear to upregulate distinct genes. Comparisons also suggest genes induced by metal exposure across diverse polychaete species, indicating potential conserved roles in metal-stress response. New markers identified offer alternatives to current markers that are deemed insufficient.

Interactive effects of increased temperature and gadolinium pollution in Paracentrotus lividus sea urchin embryos: a climate change perspective

Chiara Martino et al.

Summary: Gradual ocean warming and exposure to gadolinium have negative effects on the development and biomineralization of sea urchin embryos and larvae. Elevated temperatures can mitigate the negative effects of gadolinium on development, but extreme warming combined with gadolinium treatment may have synergistic negative effects. Various stressors, including heat stress and chemical exposure, can induce different cellular stress response strategies in marine organisms, as shown by the expression of heat shock proteins and apoptotic processes. High levels of heat shock protein expression may have antagonistic effects on apoptosis, highlighting the complexity of interactions between multiple stressors in marine species in coastal environments.

Copper-binding ligands in deep-sea pore waters of the Pacific Ocean and potential impacts of polymetallic nodule mining on the copper cycle

Sophie A. L. Paul et al.

Summary: The study analyzed the Cu-binding L concentration in deep-sea pore waters of two polymetallic nodule provinces in the Pacific Ocean and found that Cu was predominantly complexed by L, indicating deep-sea mining is unlikely to cause a release of toxic Cu2+ concentrations. The excess of L found in shallow pore waters also suggested that even with Cu release through mining activities, Cu2+ likely remains beneath toxic thresholds.
