High resolution vehicular exhaust and non-exhaust emission analysis of urban-rural district of India

Gaurav Tomar et al.

Summary: This study highlights the unnoticed air quality deterioration in smaller Indian cities and rural areas due to vehicular emissions, showing similarities with megacities. By accurately allocating vehicular activities and emissions, it reveals the dominant form of PM2.5 emissions and the contribution of different types of vehicles to pollution in urban and rural areas. Incorporating vehicle movement results in more accurate emission estimation, especially in an urban-rural landscape.

Chemical significance and source apportionment of fine particles (PM2.5) in an industrial port area in East Asia

Chung-Shin Yuan et al.

Summary: This study investigated the chemical significance, seasonal variation, spatial distribution, and sources of fine particles (PM2.5) in an industrial port area. The results showed that both local sources and long-range transport contributed to the increase in PM2.5 levels. Secondary inorganic aerosols (SIAs) dominated the water-soluble ions (WSIs) in PM2.5. Crustal elements and trace elements were the main contributors to the metallic content of PM2.5. Ship emissions and biomass burning were identified as important sources of PM2.5. The study also found that polluted air masses in winter were blown from the north by Asian Northeastern Monsoons (ANMs), while clean air masses in summer came mainly from the oceans via Asian Southwestern Monsoons (ASMs). The dominant sources of PM2.5 in the Kaohsiung Seaport were industrial emissions, secondary aerosols, ship/vehicular exhausts, oceanic spray, and soil dust.

Tailpipe and Nontailpipe Emission Factors and Source Contributionsof PM10on Major Freeways in the Los Angeles Basin

Vahid Jalali Farahani et al.

Summary: This study estimated the emission factors of PM10 and its chemical constituents from various sources on two freeways in the Los Angeles basin. The results showed that non-tailpipe emissions, particularly from heavy-duty vehicles on the I-710 freeway, had higher PM10 and metal element emission factors compared to the I-110 freeway. The study also found that road dust resuspension contributed twice as much non-tailpipe PM10 as tire and brake wear.

Size distribution, meteorological influence and uncertainty for source-specific risks: PM2.5 and PM10-bound PAHs and heavy metals in a Chinese megacity during 2011-2021

Yingze Tian et al.

Summary: This study explores the size distribution, meteorological influence, and uncertainty of source-specific risks of atmospheric particulate matter (PM), aiming to improve risk-mitigation strategies for health protection. The results show that different sources of PM have varying levels of risk due to heavy metals and polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons, and these risks are influenced by meteorological conditions and dominant toxic components.

Modelling driving factors of PM2.5 concentrations in port cities of the Yangtze River Delta

Yang Zhang et al.

Summary: This study investigated the driving factors of PM2.5 in port cities of the Yangtze River Delta in China. NO2, SO2, and the day of year were found to be strongly associated with PM2.5 concentration. Anthropogenic emissions had complex roles in regulating PM2.5 concentration, and higher levels of SO2 and cargo throughput were associated with higher PM2.5 levels. This research provides a scientific basis for formulating PM2.5 prevention and control policies in the region.

PM10 and PM2.5 emission factors for non-exhaust particles from road vehicles: Dependence upon vehicle mass and implications for battery electric vehicles

David C. S. Beddows et al.

Summary: This paper examines the relationship between vehicle weight and PM10 and PM2.5 emissions from electric vehicles and traditional internal combustion engine vehicles. The outcome is dependent on the use of regenerative braking in electric vehicles relative to friction braking. Overall, there will be modest changes to the total local emissions of particles from a passenger car built to current emissions standards.

Non-exhaust traffic emissions: Sources, characterization, and mitigation measures

Amelia Piscitello et al.

Summary: Non-exhaust emissions (NEE) from road traffic, including particulate matter (PM) emitted from brake, tyre, road pavement and railway wear, as well as resuspension of road dust, account for up to 90% of total traffic-related PM emitted. Current lack of standardized monitoring approaches has hindered the establishment of international regulations to limit NEE, making mitigation and prevention strategies the main focus. While measures like street washing and switching to electric vehicles have shown short-term effectiveness in reducing PM levels, concerns remain regarding their long-term sustainability and the need for further research and improvement in existing technologies and strategies.

Comprehensive characterization of tire and road wear particles in highway tunnel road dust by use of size and density fractionation

Philipp Klockner et al.

Summary: Through fractionation and analysis of tunnel road dust, it was found that TRWP content was high and mainly concentrated in the 20-50 mm size fraction, while organic tire constituents were mainly concentrated in the smallest size fraction. Biological analysis showed that solvent extracts from size and density fractions had effects on the arylhydrocarbon receptor and the adaptive response to oxidative stress.
