Low-temperature thermal-enhanced anoxic biodegradation of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons in aged subsurface soil

Yaling Gou et al.

Summary: Many deep soil environments lack oxygen, but other compounds such as NO3-, SO42-, Fe3+, Mn4+, and CO2 can act as terminal electron acceptors in the degradation of PAHs. However, the use of CO2 as a terminal electron acceptor for the degradation of PAHs under methanogenic conditions is not well understood. The low degradation rate of PAHs under anoxic conditions is a major obstacle in promoting and applying this technology. Therefore, this study conducted a thermal enhanced biodegradation microcosm experiment at low temperatures (<50 degrees C) under methanogenic conditions to investigate the influence of temperature on PAH removal. The results showed that higher temperatures, such as 45 degrees C, were more effective in PAH removal compared to lower temperatures like 15 degrees C or 30 degrees C.

Soil drying legacy does not affect phenanthrene fate in soil but modifies bacterial community response*

Jun Zeng et al.

Summary: The drying practice prior to pollutant addition has legacy effects on the soil microbial community structure, resulting in irreversible shifts in the communities. However, it has no significant impact on phenanthrene mineralization and non-extractable residue formation. The response of bacterial communities to PAH degradation is altered, leading to a decrease in the abundance of potential PAH degradation genes.

Thermally enhanced bioremediation: A review of the fundamentals and applications in soil and groundwater remediation

Qing Wang et al.

Summary: Thermally enhanced bioremediation is a new concept that combines thermal treatment and bioremediation to address the challenges of low efficiency and long duration. This study provides a comprehensive review of the fundamentals and applications of thermally enhanced bioremediation, and summarizes the effects of temperature on soil and contaminants. The study also evaluates the use of traditional and renewable energy sources in thermally enhanced bioremediation, and presents future research perspectives.

Effects of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbon structure on PAH mineralization and toxicity to soil microorganisms after oxidative bioremediation by laccase

Jun Zeng et al.

Summary: The study found that the oxidation process promoted the formation of non-extractable residues of PAHs and had different effects on mineralization among the three PAHs. Oxidation enhanced the mineralization of high-molecular-weight PAHs but inhibited the mineralization of low-molecular-weight PAH. The inhibition of anthracene after oxidation suggests increased toxicity of soil, which coincided with a decrease in soil nitrification activity, bacterial diversity, and PAH-ring hydroxylating dioxygenase gene copies.

Distribution and bioaccessibility of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons in industrially contaminated site soils as affected by thermal treatment

Yuan Cheng et al.

Summary: Thermal treatment can efficiently remove volatile pollutants and distinctly change the speciation of organic carbon and behaviors of residual pollutants. Increased temperature enhances desorption efficiency of PAHs but decreases their bioaccessibility. Aromatic carbon plays a key role in controlling the desorption of residual PAHs during thermal treatment or n-butanol extraction.
