Enhanced removal of aged and differently functionalized polystyrene nanoplastics using ball-milled magnetic pinewood biochars

Qingying Shi et al.

Summary: This study successfully prepared magnetic biochars by ball-milling biochar with Fe3O4 nanoparticles, which showed high efficiency in removing polystyrene nanoparticles (NPs) from water. The magnetic biochars synthesized at different pyrolysis temperatures exhibited improved removal capacity compared to pristine biochars. The best removal efficiency was achieved by MBC500 due to its larger specific surface area and abundant oxygen-containing functional groups. Mechanism analysis indicated that hydrophobicity, electrostatic attraction, H-bonding formation, and 7C-7C conjunction contributed to the adsorption process.

Biodegradation potential of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons in Taihu Lake sediments

Zaisheng Yan et al.

Summary: The biodegradation potential of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) in Taihu Lake sediments was assessed through the construction of sediment microcosms and estimation of PAH-degrading bacteria (PDB) abundance using the MPN method. Results showed that there were significant differences in PAH degradation based on the molecular size of the PAHs, with higher removal efficiency observed under aerobic conditions compared to anaerobic conditions. The presence of PDB was found to be more abundant in high PAH-contaminated sites, suggesting a spatial distribution influencing the natural attenuation and cycling of PAHs in Taihu Lake.

Toward understanding submersed macrophyte Vallisneria natans-microbe partnerships to improve remediation potential for PAH-contaminated sediment

Haifeng Yan et al.

Summary: Rhizodegradation using the submersed macrophytes Vallisneria natans shows potential for restoring polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbon (PAH)-contaminated sediments. This study found that different sediment types can influence the outcomes of rhizoremediation and the microbial communities along the sediment-V. natans continuum. V. natans presence was particularly effective in highly contaminated sites, influencing PAH rhizodegradation and microbial communities, especially in rhizosphere sediments. The microbial community structure along the sediment-plant continuum was primarily shaped by the niche of V. natans. Selective enrichment of specific microbial taxa like Herbaspirillum was observed in the endosphere of V. natans, which can use PAH as a carbon source and promote plant growth. Understanding the interactions between V. natans and microbes could help develop novel decontamination strategies based on rhizosphere and root interior interactions between plants and their microbial associates.

Summary: This study investigated the sorption behaviors of organic pollutants on microplastics and their bioaccessibilities and cancer risks in the human body. The results showed that the sorption capacity of microplastics was related to their hydrophobicity, and the sorbed pollutants had high bioaccessibilities in gastrointestinal fluids. Moreover, the cancer risks posed by these pollutants on microplastics were found to be significant.

The addition of biochar as a sustainable strategy for the remediation of PAH-contaminated sediments

Francesco Bianco et al.

Summary: Biochar is proposed as an innovative and sustainable technology for remediation of PAH-contaminated sediments, mainly through sorption mechanisms. The use of biochar can significantly improve the efficiency of PAH removal from sediments, especially when used in combination with multi-PAH systems and high dosages. Additionally, biochar has shown to decrease PAH degradation during bioaugmentation and phytoremediation of sediments, but can increase degradation when used with nitrate as an electron acceptor in low-temperature conditions.

Cable bacteria extend the impacts of elevated dissolved oxygen into anoxic sediments

Feifei Liu et al.

Summary: Despite limited permeability of oxygen in sediments, profound biogeochemical responses are often observed in anoxic sediments to fluctuations in dissolved oxygen concentration in overlaying water. Analysis of sediments from an urban river suffering from long-term PAHs contamination revealed significant microbial and physicochemical changes in response to artificially elevated DO, with accelerated degradation of PAHs despite minimal increase in porewater DO. The study suggests that cable bacteria play a crucial role in mediating the impacts of eDO in anaerobic sediments by altering sediment properties and reinforcing microbial community interactions.

Dual roles of biochar redox property in mediating 2,4-dichlorophenol degradation in the presence of Fe3+ and persulfate

Summary: Recent studies show that biochars play a crucial role in mediating the degradation of organic contaminants and can amplify the degradation in a Fenton-like reaction with Fe3+ and persulfate. Different properties of biochars have varying effects on the removal of 2,4-DCP, with the combination of persulfate and Fe3+ significantly promoting the degradation of the contaminant. The direct electron transfer between biochars and 2,4-DCP also contributes significantly to the degradation process.
