Application of analytical hierarchical process, multi-influencing factor, and geospatial techniques for groundwater potential zonation in a semi-arid region of western India

Brijesh Yadav et al.

Summary: Groundwater resources in semi-arid regions of Rajasthan are depleting rapidly due to over-exploitation and climate changes. This study used AHP, GIS, and MIF techniques to identify and categorize groundwater potential zones. Ten influential factors were considered, and the results were cross-validated with well depth data. The findings can assist in locating drilling sites and developing sustainable groundwater and land use policies.

Water table response to rainfall and groundwater simulation using physics-based numerical model: WASH123D

Fiaz Hussain et al.

Summary: The study aims to evaluate the groundwater level response to rainfall and determine the recharge potential for shallow aquifers. The results show that the rise in water table linearly depends on the amount of rainfall, with annual recharge rates ranging from 12-43% of rainfall. Real-time case scenario simulations confirm the reasonable hydrological response of groundwater levels to rainfall.

A stakeholder-based framework for improving the resilience of groundwater resources in arid regions

Pouya Moghaddasi et al.

Summary: This paper proposes a stakeholder-based framework for groundwater resources management in arid regions, including stakeholder analysis, system dynamics modeling, and resilience analysis. The groundwater management scenarios are ranked using the Electoral College Voting method. The results show that implementing modern irrigation systems and water transfer is the socially optimal scenario in the Rafsanjan plain in Iran, reducing water consumption and improving groundwater resilience.

Integrating GIS and remote sensing for delineation of groundwater potential zones in Bundelkhand Region, India

Mukesh Kumar et al.

Summary: The present research utilizes Geographic Information System and Remote Sensing-based frequency ratio technique to identify groundwater prospective areas in the Bundelkhand region, India. Various factors such as geomorphology, lithology, slope, soil, rainfall, drainage density, lineament density, and land use/land cover were considered in the analysis. Thematic maps were created for each factor, and weights were assigned using the frequency ratio technique. The resulting groundwater prospective areas were verified using actual well yield data.

Optimizing groundwater level monitoring networks with hydrogeological complexity and grid-based mapping methods

Saeideh Samani et al.

Summary: This study developed a method for optimizing groundwater monitoring networks based on hydrogeological information and network design methods. A case study of the Varamin aquifer in Iran was conducted to demonstrate the application of the method. The study also addressed challenges in statistical methods related to hydrogeological complexities. The proposed method resulted in a recommended monitoring network that involved the removal of six existing monitoring wells and the addition of 23 new observation wells to the existing network.

The Dynamic Change and Effect of Rainfall Induced Groundwater Flow

Yuqiong He et al.

Summary: This study investigates the influence of rainfall on groundwater flow and slope stability. Through monitoring and modeling, it is found that rainfall affects groundwater distribution and soil stability significantly, leading to soil structure damage, water softening, and correlations with soil properties and slope gradient.

Identification of groundwater potential zones in Kabul River Basin, Afghanistan

Hamidullah Tani et al.

Summary: This study evaluates the potential groundwater zones in the Kabul River Basin using GIS and AHP, revealing that the best groundwater zones are mainly located in the downstream and central areas, while the rest are randomly distributed with relatively poor conditions in the west and southwest regions. Only 18% of the annual average precipitation infiltrates into the subsurface to recharge groundwater.
