Layered double hydroxides (LDHs)-based photocatalysts for dye degradation: a review

P. Bobde et al.

Summary: The discharge of dye-contaminated effluents in aquatic environments has serious negative effects on aquatic ecosystems and human health. Layered double hydroxides (LDHs) and their derivatives have gained significant attention as a technology for treating dye-contaminated water due to their variable shapes, stability, high surface area, uniform positive charge distribution on the surface, interplanar spacing, simplicity of synthesis, and adaptability for creating different types of composites. This review provides an overview of the use of LDHs and their derivatives for treating dye-contaminated water, including their photocatalytic applications, efficiency, degradation mechanisms, and factors affecting the photodegradation efficiency. The stability, regeneration, and reusability of LDH- and their derivative-based photocatalysts are also discussed.

Experimental and numerical elucidation of the fate and transport of antibiotics in aquatic environment: A review

Arun Kashyap et al.

Summary: This review explores various experimental and mathematical modeling strategies to study the fate and transport of antibiotics in aquatic environments and understand antimicrobial selective pressure. The concentration of residual antibiotics in effluents from bulk drug manufacturing industries is considerably higher than in municipal and hospital effluents. In aquatic systems, photolysis is the main process for antibiotic reduction in water, while hydrolysis and sorption occur in sediments. The rate of reduction varies depending on antibiotic properties and hydrodynamic conditions. Mathematical models have been used to predict antibiotic fate, but do not consider microscale interactions in real-field conditions or seasonal variations. A comprehensive model that includes antimicrobial resistance parameters is needed to accurately predict antibiotic fate.
