Testing Hidden Assumptions of Representativeness in Reach-Scale Studies of Hyporheic Exchange

Paige S. S. Becker et al.

Summary: Field studies of hyporheic exchange in mountain systems often assume representativeness without being tested, using short study reaches and limited observations. In this study, numerical models were developed from four mountain streams, and shorter reaches were extracted to test their representativeness compared to reference segments. The study also examined the locations of these representative reaches and compared variance to understand the impacts of inferring causal mechanisms based on observable characteristics. The findings highlight the importance of considering the location and length of study reaches, as well as quantifying within and between site variations, for future field practices and modeling.

A comparison of National Water Model retrospective analysis snow outputs at snow telemetry sites across the Western United States

Irene Garousi-Nejad et al.

Summary: This study compares the outputs of the US National Water Model (NWM) with observed data on snow water equivalent (SWE) and snow-covered area fraction (SCAF) in the Western United States. The NWM generally underestimates SWE and tends to melt snow early. There are also discrepancies between modelled and observed SCAF, attributed to model parameterization and observation limitations. The study identifies areas for improvement in the NWM's predictions related to snow.

An Assessment of the National Water Model's Ability to Reproduce Drought Series in the Northeastern United States

Tong Wan et al.

Summary: Portions of the northeastern United States have been experiencing drought since 2016. The U.S. Drought Monitor plays an important role in drought characterization and management, but lacks consistency in defining drought categories. This study evaluates the National Water Model's ability to predict streamflow, soil moisture, and drought categories. The results show that the NWM provides moderate predictions of streamflow, but performs worse in predicting soil moisture. However, the NWM output can improve the designation of drought boundaries.

Shallow subsurface heat recycling is a sustainable global space heating alternative

Susanne A. Benz et al.

Summary: Despite the global interest in green energy alternatives, little attention has been paid to the feasibility of recycling the ground heat accumulated due to urbanization, industrialization, and climate change. This study shows the theoretical potential of this heat on a multi-continental scale and highlights the importance of considering subsurface heat recycling in the move to a low-carbon economy in a warmer world.

Irene Garousi-Nejad et al.

Summary: This study compared the US National Water Model (NWM) snow outputs to observed snow water equivalent (SWE) and snow-covered area fraction (SCAF) in the Western United States, finding that the model generally under-predicted SWE, with model input temperatures slightly cooler than observed and a tendency to melt snow early.

Greater vulnerability of snowmelt-fed river thermal regimes to a warming climate

Hongxiang Yan et al.

Summary: The study highlights the significant impact of cold snowmelt on river temperatures in mountainous river systems, especially in the context of warming climate. Future climate change may lead to larger temperature increases in river reaches in high-elevation snow-dominated areas, primarily due to the influences of rising temperatures and decreased snowfall.

Long-term hydrology and aquatic biogeochemistry data from H. J. Andrews Experimental Forest, Cascade Mountains, Oregon

Sherri L. Johnson et al.

Summary: The H. J. Andrews Experimental Forest in western Oregon encompasses the Lookout Creek watershed and has been collecting, curating, and archiving hydrologic, chemistry, and precipitation data for up to 70 years. Established in 1948, the research focus started with studying the effects of forest harvest and logging-road construction on water quality, quantity, and vegetation succession, and later expanded to include terrestrial and aquatic species, communities, and ecosystem dynamics. The forest includes nine small experimental watersheds, 10 gaging stations, and extensive climate and sensor metadata for data quality control.

Evaluation of NOAA National Water Model Parameter Calibration in Semiarid Environments Prone to Channel Infiltration

Timothy M. Lahmers et al.

Summary: The NOAA National Water Model (NWM), which provides operational hydrological guidance throughout the contiguous United States, was recently modified for semiarid domains to improve predictive skill. Model performance in semiarid environments is limited by current settings and biases of the calibration scheme, but an alternative calibration scheme with a new objective function can ameliorate model biases in some semiarid environments.
