The carnitine degradation pathway of Acinetobacter baumannii and its role in virulence

Jennifer Breisch et al.

Summary: The metabolism, regulation and role in virulence of the opportunistic human pathogen Acinetobacter baumannii with carnitine has been studied. It was found that D-malate is formed during carnitine oxidation and further oxidized, contrary to previous belief. The transcriptional regulator CarR plays a role in controlling the expression of the carnitine operon. Addition of carnitine significantly increased the virulence of A. baumannii.

K+ and its role in virulence of Acinetobacter baumannii

Patricia Koenig et al.

Summary: Acinetobacter baumannii is a global threat to healthcare institutions due to its multiple antibiotic resistances and ability to persist in low water activity environments. Deletion of K+ transporter genes in A. baumannii results in growth defects and metabolic dysfunction, affecting its pathogenicity in the host. The mutants also show reduced resistance to reactive oxygen species and impaired virulence, providing insights into the importance of K+ uptake in pathogenicity.

L-Arabinose Transport and Metabolism in Salmonella Influences Biofilm Formation

Erin M. Vasicek et al.

Summary: The study showed that L-arabinose negatively impacts the biofilm formation of Salmonella enterica serovar Typhimurium. When L-arabinose metabolism is blocked, biofilm formation returns to baseline levels. Additionally, the study discovered that the inability to import extracellular L-arabinose leads to a significant increase in biofilm formation.
