Spatial-temporal heterogeneity of ecosystem service interactions and their social-ecological drivers: Implications for spatial planning and management

Hao Xia et al.

Summary: This study mapped the supply of six ecosystem services (ESs), identified their trade-offs/synergies and bundles, and determined the dominant social-ecological drivers. The findings provided sustainable spatial planning and management strategies at both grid and sub-watershed scales. The results showed spatial heterogeneity in the patterns of ESs, with varying changes in food production and water supply. The study also identified ES pairs with declined synergies and suggested integrating knowledge on ES interactions into spatial planning for sustainable ecosystem management across scales.

Ecosystem Benefits Provision of Green Stormwater Infrastructure in Chinese Sponge Cities

Rui Wang et al.

Summary: This study explores public perception of sponge city development and green stormwater infrastructure (GSI) in four pilot sponge cities in China. The survey finds that the public is more concerned about the impact of stormwater on their quality-of-life, while experts focus more on the environmental benefits. The study identifies experience, familiarity, concern, trust, age, and city as factors that significantly affect public perception of GSI benefits.

Multi-scale spatio-temporal analysis of soil conservation service based on MGWR model: A case of Beijing-Tianjin-Hebei, China

Yuejing Rong et al.

Summary: This study clarifies the drivers of soil conservation service and investigates the multi-scale driving mechanism in the Beijing-Tianjin-Hebei region. The results indicate that the dominant drivers of soil conservation service have a wide-ranging scale effect and that the contribution of natural factors exceeds landscape and socioeconomic factors at the region scale. However, at smaller spatial scales, the driving force of landscape and socioeconomic factors tends to increase. Additionally, the drivers of soil conservation service change over time due to regional factors such as land use, economy, and ecological restoration projects.

Analysis of ecosystem service drivers based on interpretive machine learning: a case study of Zhejiang Province, China

Xiaohang Xu et al.

Summary: A systematic understanding of the driving mechanisms and relationships of ecosystem services is crucial for successful ecosystem management. This study found that each ecosystem service had key driving factors, and the synergy and trade-off relationships between services were determined by the direction and intensity of these factors. Therefore, managing the dominant drivers is essential for improving the supply capacity of ecosystem services.

Assessment of Ecosystem Services: Spatio-Temporal Analysis and the Spatial Response of Influencing Factors in Hainan Province

Binyu Ren et al.

Summary: This study evaluated the spatial and temporal changes of three ecosystem services (water yield, soil conservation, and carbon storage) in Hainan Province, and analyzed the spatial heterogeneity of the influencing factors. The results showed that the ecosystem services were relatively weak at lower elevations, there were obvious hot spots and cold spots in water yield and soil conservation, and different land use types had different impacts on ecosystem services. Precipitation, normalized difference vegetation index, and elevation factors had significant effects on ecosystem services.
