Monitoring of soil contamination from olive mill wastewater (OMW) using physico-chemical, geotechnical analysis and electrical resistivity tomography (ERT) investigation

Wissal Issaoui et al.

Summary: Mediterranean countries are known for their significant contribution to olive oil production, which generates a large amount of olive mill wastewater (OMW). In Tunisia, uncontrolled OMW disposal sites cause environmental problems and pose risks to human health. This study focuses on the environmental characterization and evaluation of waste zones in the Sidi Bouzid region, Tunisia. The geophysical mapping (electrical resistivity tomography-ERT method) is used to monitor the subsurface infiltration of OMW. The results show that ERT is an efficient and powerful method to control and monitor the movement of contaminants in OMW disposal sites.

Imaging the distribution of bitumen contaminants in shallow coastal plain sands in southwestern Nigeria using electrical resistivity

Solomon M. Jekayinfa et al.

Summary: Naturally occurring bitumen seeps in southwestern Nigeria contaminate soil and groundwater in communities in the eastern segment of the Dahomey Basin. This study uses electrical resistivity imaging techniques to map the distribution of these seeps in the shallow subsurface of the Imakun-Omi community, and demonstrates the successful application of this method in identifying areas contaminated by bitumen seeps within coastal sands.

Time-lapse electrical resistivity tomography (ERT) monitoring of used engine oil contamination in laboratory setting

Hafiz Mohammed Nazifi et al.

Summary: Geophysical methods, specifically time-lapse electrical resistivity tomography (ERT), were used to monitor the migration of used engine oil (UEO) and investigate its electrical characteristics within a tank aquifer system. The results showed both vertical and lateral migration of UEO, with the latter being dominant. The electrical resistivity of UEO changed significantly over time, possibly due to degradation caused by microbial activity.

Characterization of legacy landfills with electrical resistivity tomography; a comparative study

A. Guinea et al.

Summary: Historic landfills that do not meet current standards pose risks to the environment and human health. This study used electrical resistivity tomography to characterize two landfill sites that are identified as posing risks. The results allowed for defining the boundaries and depth of the landfill, identifying different types of waste and their distribution, and describing the relationship between resistivity distribution and gas release.

New insights into arsenic and cadmium distribution and origin in paddy soils using electrical resistivity tomography

Nesrine Chaali et al.

Summary: This study used electrical resistivity tomography, combined with soil chemical data and statistical analysis, to predict the distribution of As and Cd in paddy soils. The results showed that As compounds were mainly distributed in shallow soil layers, while Cd compounds were mainly found in deeper soil layers. The correlation analysis between electrical resistivity and As/Cd content proved the feasibility of this approach.

Pollution threat to water and soil quality by dumpsites and non-sanitary landfills in Brazil: A review

Alice K. M. Morita et al.

Summary: This work provides an overview of environmental studies conducted in areas affected by dumpsites and nonsanitary landfills in Brazil, identifying main contaminants and assessing their environmental impact for guidance on intervention measures. The results reveal that Brazilian dumpsites are causing negative impacts on surrounding soils and water resources, posing ecological and public health risks that persist even after closure. Additionally, the study suggests the need for strict enforcement methods and monitoring plans to address this significant environmental problem in Brazil.
