Level, distribution, ecological, and human health risk assessment of heavy metals in soils and stream sediments around a used-automobile spare part market in Nigeria

T. O. Kolawole et al.

Summary: This research assessed the presence, sources, contamination status, ecological risk, and human health risk of heavy metals in soil and sediments of a used-automobile spare part market in Nigeria. The study found that human activities contributed to high concentrations of heavy metals, while geological factors also influenced the levels of certain metals. The anthropogenically sourced heavy metals showed moderate to high enrichment/contamination, posing potential risks to human health and the ecosystem.

Identification of the distribution, contamination levels, sources, and ecological risks of heavy metals in vineyard soils in the main grape production area of China

Marhaba Turhun et al.

Summary: In this study, we analyzed the concentrations of six heavy metals in vineyard soils from the Turpan Basin in China. The results showed that the average concentrations of arsenic, cadmium, chromium, and mercury exceeded the background values, indicating slight contamination. The spatial distribution patterns of heavy metals demonstrated heterogeneity, with chromium and nickel mainly derived from natural sources, while cadmium and lead originated from anthropogenic sources.

Determination of the affinity of heavy metals to carrier phases in soils

Yuriy Vodyanitskii et al.

Summary: A new index is proposed to determine the affinity of heavy metals to carrier phases, taking into consideration the sum of metals in the phase as a share of the bulk content of all metals in the soil. The study reveals discrepancies in the affinity series of metals for phases based on different indices, and suggests that the organophilic properties of metals are affected by the mineral composition and organic matter specificity in contaminated soils.

Assessment of Current Risks of Excessive Heavy Metal Accumulation in Soils Based on the Concept of Critical Loads: A Review

S. Koptsik et al.

Summary: This article introduces the application of the concept of critical loads and the assessment of the risks of excessive accumulation of heavy metals in soil at the international level. The critical concentrations of Cd, Pb, Cu, and Zn in soils are estimated for the first time using the functions of critical concentrations, taking into account soil properties. The article focuses on the rationality and development of models for assessing critical concentrations and transfer functions connecting HM compounds in soils and soil solutions. The environmental risks of excessive HM accumulation are evaluated by comparing them with their critical concentrations. Future challenges include reducing estimate uncertainty, studying the combined effect of different metals in multicomponent pollution, validating processes and modeling results in the field, and considering the impacts of climate change and land use.

Seasonal trends of mercury bioaccumulation and assessment of toxic effects in Asian clams and microbial community from field study of estuarine sediment

Dhiraj Kumar Chaudhary et al.

Summary: This study investigated the seasonal trends in bioaccumulation potential and toxic effects of mercury in Asian clams and microbial community. The results showed that mercury accumulation in clams and pore water was highest during the summer season at contaminated sites. The upregulation of biomarker genes in clams indicated their response to mercury contamination. High levels of mercury negatively affected bacterial and metabolic diversities.

Contrasting impacts of mobilisation and immobilisation amendments on soil health and heavy metal transfer to food chain

Jingtao Wu et al.

Summary: The study compared the effects of mobilisation and immobilisation additives on soil health, microbial communities, and metal transfer in the soil-plant-insect system. Mobilisation additives inhibited plant growth, while immobilisation additives promoted plant growth and improved soil health. Organic immobilisation amendments were most effective in reducing metal transfer and improving soil health.

Bioaccessibility and public health risk of heavy Metal(loid)s in the airborne particulate matter of four cities in northern China

Yuxuan Ren et al.

Summary: This study investigated the health risks of major toxic heavy metal(loid)s in PM10 from four large cities in northern China based on their total contents and bioaccessibility. The levels of heavy metal(loid)s in the PM10 were generally higher in winter but lower in summer, primarily due to emissions from coal combustion and unfavorable meteorological conditions in winter. Most heavy metal(loid)s posed significant public health risk via inhalation exposure, but after accounting for bioaccessibility, the non-carcinogenic risk was negligible for most metal(loid)s, except for As and Cr.

Heavy metals in soils around non-ferrous smelteries in China: Status, health risks and control measures

Zhichao Jiang et al.

Summary: The study assessed the contamination and health risks of heavy metals in soils around various types of non-ferrous smelteries in China, finding that some provinces had severe soil pollution exceeding standards, especially around copper smelteries. Strategies to control soil pollution around non-ferrous smelteries should primarily focus on Cd and Pb.
