Chemical imaging reveals diverse functions of tricarboxylic acid metabolites in root growth and development

Tao Zhang et al.

Summary: Understanding the principles of plant growth is essential for agriculture and multicellular development research. Using DESI-MSI, we mapped the chemical distribution in developing maize roots and discovered various small molecule patterns across the stem cell differentiation gradient. Through the analysis of TCA cycle metabolites in Arabidopsis and maize, we found that these metabolites are enriched in developmentally opposing regions and control root development in distinct ways. These findings shed light on plant development and offer practical methods for regulating plant growth.

A long and stressful day: Photoperiod shapes aluminium tolerance in plants

Joao Antonio Siqueira et al.

Summary: Aluminium is a major limiting factor for crop productivity in acidic soils and has significant implications for food safety in developing countries. The mechanisms that allow plants to cope with aluminium toxicity include manipulations of organic acid metabolism and DNA checkpoints. However, individually these approaches have been insufficient to overcome aluminium toxicity. Our analysis suggests that day-length may be a pivotal factor in modulating aluminium tolerance across different plant species.

Metabolic and DNA checkpoints for the enhancement of Al tolerance

Joao Antonio Siqueira et al.

Summary: Acidic soils limit food production in developing countries. High concentrations of aluminum ions inhibit plant growth and damage biomolecules such as DNA. Mitochondrial organic acids play a key role in neutralizing aluminum ions. Understanding these interactions can help develop crops that are more tolerant to aluminum toxicity.
